The piece is dedicated to Queen Mother Dr. Delois Blakely, who has served as Community Mayor of Harlem since being sworn in by former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in 1995. “Queen Mother of Reality” highlights the numerous individuals displaced and homeless in New York City. It will also be the focus of a series of workshops and programs organized by Socrates Sculpture Park. FISHER LANDAU CENTER FOR ART 38-27 30th St., Long Island City 718-937-0727 “2014 MFA Thesis Exhibition” On view through May 19 Curated by Ruba Katrib, Columbia University School of the Arts Visual Arts displays the work of 26 students during its MFA Thesis Exhibition. Funding for the 2014 exhibition is provided by Emily Fisher Landau - The Lauder Foundation/Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Fund. The pieces in the exhibit range from painting and sculptures to photographs. MOMA PS1 22-25 Jackson Ave., Long Island City 718-784-2084 “Taster’s Choice” On view thorugh May 25 This exhibition highlights emerging artists - Zak Kitnick, Nancy Lupo, and Chris Wiley - and artist collective BFFA3AE, who look at choice as both the process and content of each of their works. They recognize what specific materials can express to viewers such as: the intentionally neutral effect of brown industrial carpeting, or the aspirational nature of stainless-steel kitchen appliances. “Juxtaposing materials and images, and filtering them for specific themes, the artists allude to emotional connections between individuals and objects, amplifying, distorting, and confusing the meanings that their choices suggest,” according to a description of the exhibit on MoMA PS1’s official website. MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE 35-01 35th Ave., Astoria, 718-777-6888 “THE WORLD COMES TO QUEENS: FILMS FROM THE 1939 AND 1964 WORLD’S FAIRS” On view through August 31 In celebration of the anniversaries of the 1939–40 and 1964–65 New York World’s Fairs, this exhibit features six films which were made for the fairs and which reflect post-World War II-era optimism and focus on American industry. The films can be viewed in the museum’s Video Screening Amphitheater and include scenes introducing a voice-controlled robot named Electro, behindthe scenes footage of the construction of the Unisphere and much more.
