sunnyside shines TASTE of The chefs of Sunnyside are ready to shine. Dozens of restaurants are participating in the 2014 Taste of Sunnyside, a food festival to celebrate the neighborhood’s cuisine, culture, and community. Food lovers from all over New York City are being invited to dine out on Queens Boulevard on Tuesday, May 20 between 45th and 46th streets, under the elevated No. 7 train. The neighborhood, known for its Irish pubs and spirit, is showing the world that while it still honors its past traditions, it’s also become a haven for new talent. Salt & Fat, which opened in 2011 at 41-16 Queens Blvd., was chosen by Zagat in its 100 Best Restaurants in NYC. Murphy’s Lobster Grill’s lobster mac & cheese recently won “Best Appetizer” at Queens Taste. Taste of Sunnyside will feature dishes from newly opened eateries, including Venturo Osteria & Wine Bar at 44-07 Queens Blvd. and Murphy’s Lobster Grill at 48-20 Skillman Ave., as well as beloved neighborhood staples like The Copper Kettle at 50-24 Skillman Ave. and Bliss Street Station located at 47-02 Greenpoint Ave. Queens has always been known to be home to thousands of cuisines and cultures. At the Taste of Sunnyside, adventurous diners will be able to taste authentic cuisines from Columbia, Italy, Romania, Japan, Ireland, Mexico, France and as well as traditional American. Gourmands can expect the award-winning lobster mac & cheese, Colombian kernel corn, Romanian hors d’oeuvres, smoked meatballs and seitan with vegan mole poblano – just to name a few. For some of these restaurant owners, Taste of Sunnyside is a chance to show the rest of New York City that the neighborhood’s restaurants can easily compete with ones in Manhattan and Brooklyn. “To get a lobster and steak like we serve here, you’d have to go to the Palm,” said Murphy’s owner Michael Murphy. “We’ll put our kitchen up against any other kitchen in the city.” Taste of Sunnyside is hosted by Sunnyside Shines in partnership with Edible Queens. A portion of the ticket proceeds benefit beautification projects in Sunnyside.
