Long Island City School of Ballet On Pointe www.queenscourier.com I LIC COURIER I MAY 2013 BY ROSA KIM Students at the Long Island City School of Ballet (LICSB)not only develop their dancing skills, but also learn to maintain their discipline and focus. The LICSB, located at 44-02 23rd Street, has become an integral part of the neighborhood since it was founded in 2006 by Eric Ragan. The school, which also offers a summer school program in partnership with the LIC Academy of Music and Secret Theatre Academy of Dramatic Arts, is a favorite among local parents and comes highly recommended by online parenting guides such as Queensmamas.com and Newyorkmomsworld. com. Ragan, a Texas native and director of the school, worked as a professional ballet dancer for 25 years both in the U.S. and abroad. It has been a labor of love for Ragan to build the school, now serving close to 200 students. “We trained our first group of kids. It’s been a big journey,” said Ragan. “We’re special because I have the best teachers from anywhere.” Parents can expect ballet to enhance their children’s mental development, she said. “They not only get technique and terminology and moving to music and all the coordination that comes with it, but it makes the kids smarter,” said Ragan. The faculty at the LICSB teaches children as young as two and adults into their 60s. Along with being beneficial for a child’s development, the “concentrated movement to music” works in maintaining physical and mental health. The school’s goal is to offer students the foundation for pursuing a career in ballet. “They have the basis for doing that if they want to. You want to train them so that they’re prepared and that they can function in a much higher pressure environment,” said Ragan. But for the majority of the kids who won’t become professional dancers, their time at the LICSB is about developing dedication and confidence to take with them to other areas in their lives. LICSB offers classes by age group every day of the week. Rates begin at $450 per semester for one class per week up to $1,200 per semester for four classes. A registration fee of $25 is applied for new students. The school offers a 5 percent sibling discount and payment plans are available. Adult classes are also offered for all fitness levels.
