24BY ALEXA ALTMAN cuisine Not exactly your mother’s food MP Taverna BY BRADLEY HAWKS The fortress sits on the corner of Ditmars Boulevard and 32nd Street, already with eager patrons after just opening a few weeks ago. The second floor is a little more hushed, with handsome industrial design and brushed brass lampshades dangling over each table. All in all, the bi-level restaurant can seat 150 patrons, plus an outdoor dining area along the sidewalk. At the helm of this new culinary castle is distinguished chef, producer, James Beard Award nominee, and author, Michael Psilakis. “Astoria is like coming back to home. Not that I grew up here,” laughs the Long Island native, “but just the memories of being here as a kid. It’s changing… it continues to change. I didn’t know if Astoria was ready for the type of Greek food that I wanted to do,” which he describes as “not exactly my mother’s food.” MAY 2013 I LIC COURIER I www.queenscourier.com
