Ace the Summer
BY BROOKE SINGER AND JENNA BAGCAL
Kids and teens looking to pick up a new
skill this summer are just a ferry ride away
from doing just that at the Roosevelt
Island Racquet Club, which hosts four
Advantage Camp programs this summer.
The programs for children ages 4 to 17 includes
Advantage Day Camp, Advantage Jr. Tennis Camp,
Advantage QuickStart Tennis Camp and Advantage
STEAM and Reading program and runs for 12 weeks
from June 11 to Aug. 31.
Each of the four programs offers a range of
activities for kids to enjoy this summer. Advantage
Day Camp allows kids ages 4 to 14 to participate
in swimming, art, gym and field sports and enrich-ment
and excursions.
Tennis enthusiasts have two programs to choose
from based on age and skill level. Beginners ages
4 to 7 can enroll in Advantage QuickStart Tennis

Camp, which customizes the game for age, ability
and fun. The half-day program runs from 9 a.m. to
12 p.m. and campers can spend the rest of the day
at the Advantage Day Camp for a discounted rate.
Those who are more advanced can sign up for
the Advantage Jr. Tennis camp for players ages 6
to 17. The camp focuses on more drills and skills
allows players to spend more time on the courts.
Following camp, kids can enjoy swimming in the
afternoons.
Kids who want to enrich their brains this summer
can participate in the Advantage STEAM and Read-ing
program, which is new in 2019. Campers ages 6
to 9 can work together on projects, hone their math
skills write and receive tutoring. The program runs
for a half day from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and kids can
attend Advantage Day camp at a discount.
And unlike many camps, Advantage Camps al-lows
kids to sign up by the week or even just for
specific days.
“The thing that makes us most unique is our
flexibility,” said Bob Ingersole, director of Advantage
Day Camps. “Members can sign up for a weekly
package or pick and choose days throughout the
summer, so a lot of people like that.”
At the camp, children can participate in three
to four activities each day. These activities include
field and gym sports, tennis, swimming and arts and
crafts. What makes them different from your average
day camp is that they mix in one enrichment activity
every day, including chess, fencing or theater arts.
Plus, campers have access to the great facilities
at the club, which has 12 air-conditioned HarTru
tennis courts.
“We have great facilities, with lots of outdoor
space for enrichment activities,” Ingersole said.
The Roosevelt Island Racquet Club is accessible
by ferry, bus, subway (F train), tram and car. If you
choose to drive, there is free on-site parking.
