D E C E M B E R Le Havre Art League Show 2019
BY JILL DAVIS
The Le Havre Art League hosted its annual
art show in the Clubhouse on Sunday,
November 17. As always, it was a beautiful
afternoon and, as always, art lovers were treated
to a wide variety of media and a treasure
trove of talent.
The exhibits included the works of several
returning artists: Jan Aroozman, Chuck
Bentz, Jim Bischoff, Helene Oelerich, Dottie
Schwartz and Anthony (“Rhino”) Vitolo who
presented a range of work in photography, oil
on canvas, acrylic on enamel and ink on paper.
It’s always great to see artists come back to
the show and share their newest creations
each year.
Notably, Jan and Anthony both changed
things up a bit this year. Jan’s applying her use
of mixed media to a range of beautiful (and
practical) pieces using a technique called “Dot
Mandala,” which is another way of saying she
creates her lovely designs by painting acrylic
and enamel dots on everything from pendants
to coffee mugs to coasters.
Readers may remember Anthony from last
year’s art show, where he caused quite a bit
of talk with his amazing finger painted art.
He’s expanded his repertoire this year and is
focusing much more on using a brush for his
beautiful oil-on-canvas landscapes.
Attendees were also introduced to the work
of several exhibitors who joined the art show
for the first time this year. Mitchell Umanoff
presented his collection of abstracts painted
with acrylic on board. Mitchell hails from just
across Powells Cove Blvd. at Cryder Point and
is an avid painter. “I’ve been doing these paintings
for about 25 years,” he said.
Kathy Tsoupros is another neighbor from
Cryder Point whose medium is pottery. She
and fellow potter, Melody Selden from Glen
Cove, were also first-time Le Havre exhibitors,
although they’ve been honing their craft for
several years. Kathy said, “I’ve been working
in pottery for about five years. Melody’s been
at it longer than I have, about 12 years now.”
Melody said, “We love it and go to the pottery
studio a few times a week. It’s incredibly
relaxing.”
Lillian Tantatnick, a Le Havre resident,
returned to the art show after several years to
display her extensive hand-made jewelry collection
which included necklaces, earrings and
bracelets, while Heidi Warm from Great Neck
shared her unique acrylic-on-canvas paintings,
many of which incorporate words with her
colorful images.
The afternoon included wine and snacks and,
most enjoyably, the music of Mark Cabon and
Chuck Bentz. It was great to have Mark and
Chuck return to the show again this year and
add that special touch to the mellow mood of
the day.
If you missed this year’s event, be sure to
plan ahead for next year’s annual art show. It’s
a truly special day you won’t want to miss!
