Maureen Sawey
A Great Le Havre Friend and Neighbor
BY IRENE BERNSTEIN-PECHMÈZE
Building 30
It is with great sadness that Le Havre
announces the death of long-time resident
Maureen Sawey, who passed away
suddenly on Feb. 19. Maureen, who lived
in Le Havre for over 20 years, was the
quintessential good neighbor, not only
participating in many Le Havre activities,
such as exercise classes, chair yoga
and more, but organizing weekly Bingo
Nights and volunteering on committees.
It seemed that she knew everyone and
everyone knew her.
Maureen grew up in Middle Village,
Queens, with her three sisters and two
brothers. She worked as an executive
secretary at Pepsi Cola Co. for many
years and then at Le Frak City. She and
her husband, Joe, moved to Le Havre
in 2003. Her husband predeceased her
in 2005. Maureen took up painting as a
hobby and was quite talented, showing
her work at Le Havre art shows.
To know Maureen was to love her.
Always of good cheer and ready with
her infectious laugh, she livened up any
group she participated in. Her neighbors
in Building 30 will miss her representation
as Building Captain, her concern
for our well-being and, most of all, her
friendship. Le Havre won't be the same
without her. Maureen (far right) with friends, Halloween 2019
