C R Y D E R P O I N T DECEMBER 16 OOuutt & A Abboouutt Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas! It’s especially nice when the two holidays coincide and this year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of December 24 and wraps up on January 1. Bonus: December 24 and 25 are on a Saturday and Sunday this year, so lots of people will get a long three-day (and some a fourday) weekend. What? You say you’re not into the traditional holidays? No worries. Remember Festivus, “the holiday for the rest of us,” which is observed each year on December 23. I, like you, thought that this was an ersatz holiday created solely for an episode of Seinfeld years ago, but actually, it was created by Dan O’Keefe in 1966. Years later, his son Daniel became a writer for Seinfeld and voila, Festivus became famous. Traditions on this holiday include the “Airing of Grievances,” and the eating of simple comfort food. In lieu of a candlelit menorah or sparkly Christmas tree, observers put up an unadorned aluminum Festivus pole—yes, these poles really exist, and you can buy your very own online at festivpoles.com. I promise you I’m not making this up. 16 CRYDER POINT COURIER | DECEMBER 2016 | WWW.QUEENSCOURIER.COM But whatever your holiday of choice, a happy and healthy holiday season to all!
