C R Y D E R P O I N T 6 FEBRUARY New Year’s Brunch Draws a Big Bunch! BY JILL DAVIS It was a great turnout for the Annual New Year’s Brunch on Sunday, January 8. While no one took a count, a number of people remarked that it seemed to have brought out more folks than usual. The reason for that isn’t clear; after all, most everyone knew there would be a spread of bagels, lox, bialys, croissants, lox, several kinds of cream cheese, lox, coffee, tea…did I mention lox? The crowd couldn’t have been because John DuCroiset came to play his amazing guitar, because no one knew he would be there. In fact Phil Resnick had asked him if he would come and play, but John wasn’t sure whether he could make it, and it looked iffy. But then John arrived as a wonderful surprise and as always, everyone really enjoyed his playing. Thanks John, you always add to the party! The gathering couldn’t have been large because of Rose Girome, either. A couple of us had a heads-up that her daughter, Rhea, wanted to bring a cake in honor of Rose’s upcoming 105th birthday, but there hadn’t been an announcement about it. By the way, Rose looks so good that when her birthday was announced at the brunch, a lot of people looked around as if to ask, “Who?” It was great to see you again, Rose, and I hope you had a good time. As is tradition, the brunch was held on the fi rst Sunday after New Year’s Day, so this year it was a full week into the New Year. Some speculated that maybe people were a little more rested up after all the hubbub over the holidays and more eager to attend. Who knows, but I can promise that we won’t be conducting an analysis. Whatever the reasons, the atmosphere was especially warm and friendly, and a couple of people said how nice it is to get together and catch up with neighbors that they might not see all winter — which is why we do it, of course! So see you all next year (Sunday, January 7 — be there or be square). And in the meantime, a healthy and happy 2017 to all. l-r: Jackson Eltzroth with Dad Clay and Yuzuko DeGrottle with daughter Lilliana and baby sister Mai (or is that her twin, Emily?) 6 CRYDER POINT COURIER | FEBRUARY 2017 | WWW.QUEENSCOURIER.COM Sheryl and Steve Gerber catch up with Sandy Wynn “I just can’t believe how fast the lox go,” said Jacob Salis. “I know, son, you have to move fast around here,” Dad Len explained. Loy Lassman: “It’s a good thing the food came from Utopia Bagels.” Jill Davis: “Where else?”
