Dated: May 23, 2019
Quite some time ago Junior
Cavaluzzi suggested that
I stop by Conti’s Pastry Shoppe
at 786 Morris Park Avenue to
look at all the original woodwork,
ceilings, etc. which has
not been altered since Augustino
Conti installed them in
1921. Of course, Junior also
urged me to try their pastries
which are among the best in
New York City. Then a few
days ago I got a notice from
Nick DiBrino that he was
hosting a reunion at Conti’s of
Morris Park old-timers and I
was invited.
I went and enjoyed talking
with Pete and Joe Chandry,
Gene Fruspino, Bob Capellupo,
Nick and the others.
They were all just a few years
older than I, but we all shared
similar memories growing up.
They talked about the card
games in Chandry’s basement,
doing bicycle tricks on
Kinsella Street in front of the
DiBrino or Fruspino home
and the like. There were, of
course, a few who like Bob
Araldi who couldn’t make it
but called to give their best
wishes to the group. Nick Di-
Brino also arranged for Sissy
Florio to act as the photographer
for the event and she did
a magnifi cent job. Conti’s has
become more than a meeting
site for these old-timers, it’s an
icon. They all grew up on Conti’s
pastries and all remember
the Conti family.
Augustino Conti created a
little bit of heaven in Morris
Park when he left Palermo, Sicily
to open up his Bronx pastry
shoppe. Yet, it was more than a
bakery as breakfast and other
meals were also served during
the early years. The store remained
in the family until his
great-grandson, Orlando, had
no one to pass it on to. About
nine years ago, he sold out
to Sal Paljevic who has been
treating it with the same love
and attention that Augustino
did. He’s a hands-on proprietor
who has gotten the whole
family involved. Among the
key personnel is Christina Di-
Russo who does all the cake
designing and runs the wedding
expos, etc. She loves the
work and it becomes apparent
in the end product.
The biggest seller at Conti’s
is their Boston Cream Pie
and before the holidays customers
are line up outside to
pick up their orders and it is
wise to order in advance. We
all had something different at
the reunion and mine was a
whipped cream fi lled éclair.
Everyone else’s choice also
looked great but I couldn’t possible
taste them all in one sitting.
I’ll have to go back but
in the meantime should thank
Nick DiBrino for the treat. He
was a great host and treated
the entire crew.
