H H H H H H PRIMARY VOTERS’ GUIDE 2021 H H H H H H
WHO’S RUNNING FOR BP?
Fernando Cabrera
Councilman Fernando Cabrera
currently represents the 14th
Council District, which covers
the northwest Bronx — a post he’s
held since 2010. Cabrera currently
serves as the legislative body’s majority
whip and the chair of the Government
Operations Committee. Opponents
have criticized the candidate
for being conservaitve, relative to the
median Bronx voter, although his
long time standing in the borough
makes him a formidable candidate in
the county, and a natural politician
that is sure to connect with voters in
the Bronx.
Nathalia Fernandez
Assemblymember Nathalia Fernandez
is just 32 years of age,
and represents the Morris
Park area of the Bronx.
A strongly Democratic district,
the area tends to lean conservative on
many social issues — lending favor to
the longtime politico, who has been
a longtime politics insider that once
worked Councilman Mark Gjonaj, an
outgoing staple of Bronx politics.
She now looks to be the fi rst female
lantina to represent the borough at
Borough Hall.
Vanessa Gibson
City Councilmember Vanessa
Gibson is currently term-limited
in the 16th district, and
is looking to move up to the borough
presidency — which would make her
the fi rst black female to serve in the
post.
The longtime politico — who once
represented the 77th Assembly District
in Albany — has been an outspoken
advocate for public transportation
options for lower-income areas in the
Bronx, as well as preventative measures
to combat gun violence.
Samuel Ravelo
Ravelo is the only candidate in
the race that has never held
political office before. A retired
NYPD lieutenant, Ravelo is a
strong proponent of supporting the
NYPD, and has been vocal in his opposition
to the “Defunding the Police”
movement that gained steam
in the summer of 2020.
Raveloalso immigrated to the
United States as an undocumented
immigrant.
Luis Sepulveda
Sepulveda — currently a state senator
representing the 32nd district
— has recently run into trouble
with the law, after he turned himself in
to police for allegedly choking his wife,
marking just the latest in a string of allegations
of domestic violence.
Still the pol remains relatively popular
with locals, who view him as a
champion for immigrants.
