Enjoy the outdoors while
protecting your skin
It is a great time of year to enjoy
the outdoors. There are many benefi
ts to spending time outside, with
friends and family, or taking a walk
around the neighborhood. Just remember
before going outside to take
steps to protect yourself from sun
damage. Older adults face additional
risks from the sun. A weakening immune
system makes it more diffi cult
to heal from a sunburn. Skin also
thins as you age leaving it more vulnerable
to skin cancer.
Many older adults feel they no longer
need sun protection. For older
adults that never wore sunscreen,
they may not see the benefi t in starting
now. This is wrong, older adults
should start or continue to protect
themselves as they age. Even one bad
sunburn can increase your chance of
getting skin cancer. Protecting yourself
from the sun will reduce your
risk.
It is important to keep an eye out
for any changes in your skin. Take
note of skin that becomes itchy,
bleeds, crusts or causes pain. Alert
your doctor if you have any unusual
growths. Unusual growths include
moles that are irregularly shaped,
multiple colors, and/or growing
in size. The Skin Cancer Foundation
recommends having your skin
checked by a dermatologist once a
year. The faster you catch skin cancer
the more treatable it is.
You can protect yourself from sun
damage by taking a few simple steps.
Wear sunscreen everyday on any exposed
skin. Apply SPF 30 at least 15
minutes before you leave the house
and reapply every two hours. Wear
loose fi tting long sleeve shirts, long
pants, and a wide brim hat. The sun
is strongest in the middle of the day.
Try to plan outdoor activities before
10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Stay in the
shade. You may be tempted to skip
these steps if it is cloudy or cold but
you are still at risk for negative sun
exposure. Create a sun protection
routine and stick with it.
Go outside and enjoy the sun but
remember to apply sunscreen, wear
long sleeves, and put on a hat!

UNIVERSITY CENTERS HOSTS MEMORIAL DAY BBQ
BY GENE DEFRANCIS
We have a clear focus
as to what we are
completing this year.
We want to share with
you a list of our priority’s
for AIM this year.
1) Continue the holiday
lights and tree
lighting display and celebrations. This
is possibly the most expensive project
we have and we began collecting today.
Join our Facebook and deposit into
our PayPal account or send us a check
payable to Allerton International Merchants
to 930 Allerton Avenue, Bronx,
NY 10469. We are a non-profi t organization.
2) Community garden: This is a
great need for the community and we
will see this through. We have a few
options but will also need funding and
volunteers to not just start a garden
but so it can continue and thrive.
3) Flags displayed for Flag Day,
June 14 to July 4th.
4) Coops scaffolding removed: For
years this eyesore has been erected in
our community making our neighborhood
unsafe. We will see to it the scaffolding
is removed and we need your
voice and support.
5) Community events including
Movie Nights, Bingo Night (scheduled
for Friday, July 5 at 7 p.m. at Beth Abe
$20 advance ticket $25 at the door), and
community clean ups. We will schedule
one more before our annual Back
to School Clean Up. And of course our
favorite event the Allerton International
Food Festival on Friday, August
17 with Assemblywoman Nathalia Fernandez
and our other elected offi cials.
6) New murals to combat graffi ti in
our area.
7) Storefront cameras to secure our
neighborhood.
8) Alleyway paved and secured.
9) New street lights: We have been in
communication with NYC Department
of Transportation and believe this is
something the community wants and
In honor of Memorial Day, University
Center held its annual Memorial
Day BBQ on Monday, May 27
for their residents and staff, but
there’s one person that makes
the BBQ what it is today and that
someone is Louie Ortega. Ortega
is one of the facility’s everyday
cooks, but he’s the person that
makes the most out of the BBQ,
everything from BBQ chicken,
burgers, steak and what could be
his specialty, delicious hot dogs.

barbecued treats for the residents.

needs. Plus minor repairs
and touch ups to
the ones we currently
have.
10) Allerton Avenue
and Williamsbridge
Road streets repaved.
We will also explore converting
a few side roads
to one way streets. This was motioned
and passed in previous meetings.
We want to encourage you and your
neighbors to become a member today.
The membership pays for itself. You
get a subscription to this paper and
discounts to some of your favorite
stores and events.
We are planning a few road trips.
One of them being a trip to a Civil War
re-enactment in September. More information
to follow soon as we work
out the details.
And we didn’t forget about the Business
Incubator Project. You have a entrepreneurial
itch? Reach out to us and
we will help get you started if it fi ts Allerton.
Team up with other entrepreneurs,
get your product to the public
and start building a client base.
Join us in the Five and Dime Project.
That is where you pick your fi ve favorite
stores and commit to spending
$10 a month at each one. If we can grow
this project and get everyone on board,
our shopping corridor will thrive. We
ask that you keep in mind which stores
have been helping rebuild this community.
Those are the businesses that
deserve our patronage.
Thank you to Maria from Tax Time
for supplying dessert to our meeting
last week. And to Crime Prevention
Offi cer Tyrone Medeiros for his expert
tips. Next meeting will be Tuesday,
July 2 and we have a few surprises
in store for our guests. Doors open at
7 p.m. at the Beautiful Sanz Banquet
Hall, 815 Allerton Avenue.
You can see we have a lot of work
to do. We need your help. Your energy.
Your voice. Get involved because, Your
community is your business.
