swimming and socials.
The trustees recognized the
need for girls’ programs and
were instrumental in founding
the Girls Club of New York. It
was in 1984 that the clubs were
offi cially opened to both girls
and boys and the organization
was renamed the Madison
Square Boys & Girls Club.

Montefiore Community
Center has been providing
programs and services to
the North Bronx since 1942.
During this time, a few MMCC
programs were run from a
storefront on Gun Hill Road,
some basements on Wayne
Avenue, and rented rooms in a
local school. In time, the main
building was built and the programs
were expanded to reach
a broader population base. Today,
MMCC is a multi-service
agency serving people of all
ages. Programs in education,
ESL, health, self-improvement,
arts & crafts, dance, drama,
music, summer camps, martial
arts, swimming, the borough’s
largest little league, and youth
employment annually serve
more than 28,000 Bronxites.

House, a settlement house
that moved to Pelham Parkway
in the 1950s is the heart
of the neighborhood. It is run
by the Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies as a community
center and provides social
services, support networks,
English Language classes, day
camp, a 4,000 square foot fitness
center, an indoor swimming
pool, basketball courts,
and a wide variety of programs
for children, teenagers and
