Nicosia’s was founded in Harlem
in 1925. Four generations
later they continue to offer
quality hand-crafted breads
that are slowly fermented and
baked to a light golden color to
enhance fl avor. The breads are
made fresh daily, seven days a
week and delivered throughout
the metropolitan area, north to
Connecticut and south to New
Jersey. Nicosia’s breads can be
found in Westchester, Putnam
and Sullivan counties and also
in Albany. The company is run
by Charles and Joseph Nicosia.

Lloyd Adams, the company’s
founder, toyed with a carrot
cake recipe given to him by
his mother until it was to his
liking. In 1985, he opened
the storefront in Riverdale.
Customers flocked to the location
gobbling up the best
homemade cakes, pies and
muffins in the city, according
to the bakery’s website.
After Lloyd’s passing in 2007,
his wife Betty, along with their
two children, Brandon and Lilka,
have continued to strengthen
his legacy. Today they serve the
best carrot cake, with or without
raisins, as well as red velvet,
pineapple coconut, strawberry
and chocolate layer cakes, pecan
pie, carrot muffi ns, etc.

was the brain-child of Ephraim
and Mavis Hawthorne in St.
Andrews, Jamaica. They had

Today, Omar Hawthorne, a

Bronx Pretzel makes more than
a New York-style pretzel. Their
soft bagels and pretzel breads

method. They are hand rolled
