BTR BRONX STATS - NOVEMBER 26, 2021 17
CO-OP CITY
Located in Baychester at the
intersection of Interstate 95 and the
Hutchinson River Parkway and part
of Community Board 10, Co-op City
is arguably the largest cooperative
housing development in the world. To
fully understand the size of Co-op City,
if it truly was its own city, it would be
the 10th largest municipality in New York
State. RiverBay Corporation, led by a
15-member elected board of directors,
manages Co-op City.
Construction on Co-op City began in
1968 and was completed in 1971 with
15,372 residential units in 35 high-rise
buildings, ranging from 24-33 floors) and
seven clusters of townhouses (236 total),
each three stories in height; all upon 320
acres of land. The largest development
in the United States was built on a landfill
and the former site of the Freedomland
amusement park. 55,000 people call
Co-op City home and can afford living
in the housing complex thanks to New
York’s Mitchell-Lama Program, which
subsidizes affordable housing.
In addition to the housing units,
Co-op City also features eight parking
garages, three shopping centers (one
of which – Bay Plaza, comes complete
with 13-screen multiplex movie theatre,
department stores and a supermarket), a
25-acre educational park that includes
Truman High School (complete with
planetarium), two middle schools and
three grade schools, a power plant,
4-story air-conditioning generator, and a
firehouse. There are also approximately
15 houses of worship strewn throughout
the development. Co-op City also
features four basketball courts and five
baseball diamonds.
In addition to being policed by the
45th Precinct, Co-op City also has its
own Public Safety Department, made up
of more than 100 sworn officers, that
help keep the entire cooperative and its
residents safe from crime.
AMALGAMATED HOUSES
Founded in 1927, Amalgamated
is the oldest limited equity housing
cooperative in the United States. The
cooperative was sponsored by the
Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union
under the leadership of Sidney Hillman.
It is the first co-op created by Founding
President and Manager Abraham E. Kazan,
known as “The father of cooperative
housing in the United States.”
On its first day of occupancy,
November 1, 1927, 303 residents moved
into Amalgamated Houses. Today, 1482
families of moderate income live in eleven
buildings, the oldest of which – Building
6 – is one of the original buildings. The
“newest” buildings are two Towers which
were completed in 1968 and 1970, and
replaced the original First Building.
Amalgamated has always provided
community as well as housing. There has
been an Education Department almost
from inception. It is responsible for coop
education and community activities.
There are activities for cooperators of
all ages, from Playgroup and Nursery for
toddlers through a Naturally Occurring
Retirement Community Program for
seniors. Some programs include a visual
arts committee, wood shop, fitness
club, photography club and a writer’s
workshop, among others. Community
News, detailing some of these activities,
has also been published regularly since
1929.
A 24-hour security force, serves
as a link between the 50th Precinct, the
Fire Department and EMS services and
the co-op. In addition, a high-pressure
steam facility owned and operated by
the co-op provides heat and hot water
to the entire co-op, as well as central air
cooling at Towers I and II. Power Plant
engineers and mechanics also maintain
and repair the entire utility service
infrastructure of the co-op.
PARKCHESTER NORTH AND SOUTH
CONDOMINIUM
Originally owned by the
Metropolitan Life Insurance Company,
the Parkchester housing development
was built from 1939-41 on the farmland
of the Catholic Protectory, a home for
orphaned and troubled boys conducted
by the Brothers of the Christian Schools,
which relocated to Lincolndale. In 1974,
one-third of the complex was converted
to condominiums, with the remaining
portion converting in 1986.
The four quadrants of the
development, located on 121 acres, were
divided into two entities: Parkchester
North Condominium comprising the
North Quadrant and Parkchester
South Condominium comprising the
East Quadrant, West Quadrant and
South Quadrants. Parkchester North
Condominiums consist mostly of the
owned units/condominiums and are
managed by an independent real
estate management firm, Grenadier
Management.
Some of the owned units in
Parkchester North Condominium have
since been rented or sold by their
original owners. PSC consists mostly
of the rental units and are managed by
Parkchester Preservation Management.
Parkchester North Condominium,
Inc. and Parkchester South Condominium,
Inc. are not-for-profit corporations and
condominium associations. Although
operating separately as two distinct
organizations, the two condominiums
work cooperatively for the benefit of our
community.
Today, over 82,000 individuals live
and work in the Parkchester community
of 112 residential buildings, 8,000
apartments and numerous commercial
enterprises including major retailers,
theaters, restaurants and small specialty
shops.
For these residents, the Parkchester
Condominiums maintains public parks
and a variety of recreational services
and events, including a summer concert
series at The Oval, the Friendship Day
and Kite Day festivals as well as a free
computer center with Internet access
and mini-library. T
he Condominiums also offer arts
and crafts and game centers in the
South, West and East Quardrants for our
younger residents as well as organized
youth sporting leagues
Tremont Community Mental
Health Center, and Southern
Medical Group. Together, these
facilities play a vital role in the
provision of quality healthcare
for the Bronx.
The St. Barnabas
Ambulatory Care Center holds a

the Treasury Department purchased
the property from the Archdiocese of
New York for use by the U.S. Public
