Bronx Community College was
established in 1957 after a decade
of effort by civic-minded
groups in the Bronx. Classes
began with 125 students on
February 2, 1959 at the former
site of the Bronx High School of
Science at Creston Avenue and
184th Street. In 1973, the New
York State Dormitory Authority
acquired the New York University
Heights Campus for the use of
Bronx Community College and
operations were moved soon
after to the present 43-acre site
overlooking the Harlem River.
The campus, complete with
grassy knolls, tree-lined walkways
and stunning architecture,
include modern exercise equipment,
an Olympic style swimming
pool, a television studio,
major meeting and performance
spaces and a modern student
center with space for student
organizations and a conference
area. The campus is also the
site of the Hall of Fame for Great
Americans honoring prominent
Americans who have had a signifi
cant impact on the nation’s
history.
Facilities have been consistently
renovated to accommodate the
increased demand for classroom
and laboratory space. The
liberal arts in Colston Hall and
the sciences and technologies in
Meister Hall, and the Academic
Computing Center and Learning
Center have been enhanced with
the acquisition of state-of-theart
equipment.
Presently, Bronx Community
College is experiencing a major
transformation heralding expansion
of its campus facilities, its
curricula and its services for students.
Construction of the North
Instruction Building and Library
began in spring 2009. The College
also saw the opening of The
Children’s Center building on
campus in spring 2011.
Students from 109 countries
attend the school to take advantage
of its many offerings, including
Associate in Arts Degrees for
criminal justice and liberal arts
and sciences, and Associate in
Science Degrees in business administration,
computer science,
engineering science, forensics,
and therapeutic recreation,
among others. Associate in Applied
Sciences Degrees are offered
in a wide variety of fi elds
such as accounting, automotive
technology, computer information
systems, environmental
technology, and telecommunications,
among others. Certifi cate
programs are also offered. BCC
also fi elds basketball, baseball,
cross county, indoor track, soccer
and volleyball teams.

Founded in 1847 by the Sisters of
Charity in New York, the Mount is
dedicated to providing an excellent
values-oriented education
rooted in its Catholic heritage. In
the decades before colleges and
universities were open to women,
the Academy offered higher
education for women. Now, on a
70-acre campus of rolling lawns
and wooded hills overlooking
the Hudson River, the College
of Mount Saint Vincent offers
excellent academic and professional
programs to more than
1,800 undergraduate and graduate
students from throughout
the country and the entire world.
Students take advantage of the
school’s many offerings, including
31 undergraduate majors
and minors; and four graduate
programs, along with a number
of pre-professional programs,
interdisciplinary studies and
adult programs. Students are
also prepared for the future with
a wide choice of internships —
from MTV to New Jersey Pediatric
Neurosurgery Associates,
and from Sirius Satellite Radio to
Penn Mutual Life Insurance. Division
III sports are also offered
with eight men’s teams, including
baseball and basketball, and
seven women’s teams, including
lacrosse and softball.

Founded as St. John’s College by
Bishop John Hughes, Fordham
opened in 1841 to serve the
immigrant Church of New
York. At the invitation of Bishop
Hughes, the Society of Jesus (the
Jesuits) assumed responsibility
for the College in 1846. In 1907,
the institution achieved university
status. Its name was offi cially
changed to Fordham University.
During the 20th century, the
University grew to encompass
10 schools, with campuses
in the Bronx, Manhattan and
Westchester County. Rose Hill,
the original campus, adjacent to
Little Italy, the Bronx Zoo, and
the New York Botanical Garden,
is situated on 85 acres in the
north Bronx. More than 7,000
undergraduate and graduate
students attend classes here,
with 3,369 living in University
housing.
Fordham draws students from
across the country and the world
who want to live and learn while
immersed in the diversity and
opportunity of a world capital.
Students choose from more than
50 majors in liberal arts, sciences,
and business and complete a
rich core curriculum that spans
literature, history, science,
theology, philosophy, and the arts.
Gifted students with a passion
for ideas may be invited to join
the College’s prestigious Honors
Program. Students with interests
in languages, international
affairs, or living and working
abroad can take advantage
of an extensive Study Abroad

Fordham sponsors 23 men’s
and women’s varsity sports
teams. The Fordham Rams are
members of the NCAA Division
I and compete in the Atlantic
10 Conference in baseball,
basketball, cross country,
golf, indoor and outdoor track,
rowing, soccer, softball, squash,
swimming and diving, tennis,
volleyball, and water polo, and in
the Patriot League (Division I-AA)
for football.

Established in 1853, the school
fi rst started using the name
Manhattan College in 1861.
Manhattan College identifi es
itself as a Catholic College in
the Lasallian tradition. That

tradition has continued to characterize
the special educational
experience offered by the College
over its long history. Its
constant focus has been the
education of the disadvantaged.
Manhattan has an enviable
record in this regard, albeit
engaged in the fi eld of higher
education. From its beginning,
the College has paid particular
attention to educating fi rstgeneration
college students,
and was an early proponent of
access to disadvantaged and
minority students, establishing
special scholarship funds as
early as 1938. That still holds
true today for the impressive
percentage of the student body
that come from ethnic minorities.
Currently, the College has
a student body of approximately
3,500: 2,900 undergraduates
and 600 graduate students.
The student-faculty ratio is
12:1.
Manhattan College features 19
men’s and women’s NCAA Division
I teams, including baseball,
men’s and women’s basketball,
crew, golf, men’s and women’s
lacrosse, softball, women’s volleyball
and track & fi eld, among
others.
Manhattan College maintains
a full range of programs in the
liberal arts and sciences joined
with professional programs in
engineering, business, science
and education. The quality of the
undergraduate programs has
been demonstrated by its record

The Monroe College Athletic
Department fi elds teams baseball,
men’s basketball, women’s
basketball, men’s and women’s
cross country, men’s and women’s
indoor track and fi eld, men’s
and women’s outdoor track and
fi eld, men’s soccer, softball, and
women’s volleyball. All Monroe
teams are members of the National
Junior College Athletic
Association and participate in
NJCAA Region XV. Monroe
Mustangs men’s baseball and
basketball are a Division I programs.
All other Monroe sports
play in Division III.

Hostos Community College
was created by an act of the
Board of Higher Education on
April 22, 1968, in response to
the demands of Puerto Rican
and other Hispanic leaders who
urged the establishment of a
college to meet the needs of
the South Bronx. In September
1970, Hostos admitted a
charter class of 623 students at
the site of a former tire factory
at 475 Grand Concourse. Enrollment
grew rapidly to more
than 2,000 students by June
of 1974. To meet growing interest
in the College, the campus
now has six buildings with
well-equipped science, math,
writing, and computer labs;
excellent physical education
facilities; and state-of-the-art
theatres. The goal of the school
is to become “a college of excellence
for students seeking a
liberal arts or career education
in a multilingual, multicultural
learning environment.” Students
can earn an Associates in
Arts degree in liberal arts and
criminal justice; an Associate
in Sciences in business management,
chemical engineering,
civil engineering, electrical
engineering science and community
health, among others.
Associate in Applied Science
Degree options and certifi cate
programs are also offered.
Hostos’ athletic program includes
men’s basketball, men’s
soccer, women’s basketball and
women’s volleyball.

Founded in 1874, SUNY Maritime
is the fi rst maritime school in the
country. The four-year college
located at the historic and scenic
55-acre Fort Schuyler in Throgs
Neck, offers a solid academic program
coupled with a structured
cadet life in the regiment for both
men and women. Maritime College
prepares over 1,850 students for
careers in the maritime industry,
government, military, and private
industry through a content-centered
curriculum and a hands-on,
team building approach to learning.
Maritime offers undergraduate
and graduate degrees, 20 varsity
athletic teams, summer training
cruises to Europe, fi ve ROTC options,
