It’s a summer full of change in western Queens. A local
photographer is showcasing our evolving neighborhood,
borough and city in his “Velocity” project (page 14).
The documentary “Last Call,” which just premiered
at the Queens World Film Festival, looks back on the
challenges faced by out-of-work restaurant employees
at the height of the pandemic — and it spotlights a
bartender from The Sparrow Tavern in Astoria (page
21). This summer is shaping up to be very different
from last for the restaurant industry, but it’s important
not to forget the toll COVID-19 took on thousands of
city workers. Amid the pandemic, one Astoria resident
founded a woodworking collective that’s helping to
shape our community, lending their skills to local
organizations like Free Store on Steinway (page 26).
Plus, our neighborhood is changing for the better
before our eyes: Ravenswood Playground is getting a
$7.1 million renovation, which we know many local
youngsters will enjoy come next summer (page 22).
