 picture molding for hooks and string  
 to hold frames. 
 “So it’s not just aesthetically we wanted to  
 do that,” Rabinovitch explained. “We had to;  
 there was no choice.” 
 Even the pop of gold molding on the wall  
 surrounding the pictures in the living room  
 is an illusion: it’s gold tape, since they aren’t  
 allowed to paint, either. 
 They also had to get creative with no  
 closet space in their bedroom. They put an  
 exposed rack of clothes next to the bed,  
 framed on either side by tall bookshelves  
 used for pants, shirts, sweaters, perfume and  
 other items. 
 “We have two closets in the whole apartment. 
   Two,”  Riccio  said.  “So  we  have  no  
 place to put anything. We really want to use  
 our vertical space.” 
 With countless limitations, they’ve made it  
 work. Looking ahead, they’re hoping to redo  
 the kitchen and replace some furniture, but  
 one  thing’s  for  certain:  they’re  not  leaving  
 Astoria anytime soon.
