Unicorn Coffee, a café serving a range
of coffee-based drinks along with food
and dessert, opened on Oct. 22, 2021,
in Astoria, the operations team’s hometown.
The café sells sandwiches, croissants
and soups, alongside pastries such
as danishes and macarons. However, it’s
not just the menu options that owner
Philip Capasso feels make Unicorn Coffee
unique — it’s the overall atmosphere
of acceptance and the colorful interior
of the café. “We believe in creating a
space where everyone is accepted,
pushed to being their best selves and
are empowered to follow their dreams
(all while fighting the status-quo),” he
told BORO. “We’ve engaged with many
artists, creatives and locals who find our
funky vibes a refreshing new take on the
standard coffee shop.”

Milk & Cream Cereal Bar is an ice cream
shop with a twist — and not just a soft serve
twist. The bar’s premise is that it combines
ice cream with sugary cereals to create a
unique dessert. Offering a list of nearly
20 cereal choices, customers choose one
kind to have blended into their ice cream.
On top of that, each purchase gets an included
topping, which can be chosen
from a list of 17 options, along with two
options for drizzles. Customers can also
pick one of the bar’s signature options,
which include Chocolate S’mores Galore
and Cookie Crisp Carnival. Milk & Cream
opened on Sept. 24, 2021, and the owners
said they chose Astoria because they
loved that it’s a melting pot. And it seems
that Astoria reciprocates that feeling, with
co-founder Cory Ng telling BORO, “The
community has shown us love.”

Sotto La Luna is a modern Italian restaurant
with a pasta bar and brick oven pizza
that opened in early December 2021. It
offers a range of pizza, sandwich and
pasta options, including an Angel
and Devil pizza and Bufaladop
pizza, according to its Yelp menu.
What really makes the restaurant
unique, according to the Sotto La
Luna team, is its pasta bar, which
has new homemade dishes every
day. The restaurant chose to open
in Astoria because “we believe it’s a
vibrant, multicultural neighborhood that
matches Sotto la Luna’s personality,” the
team told BORO. They also said that the
business has been well received by community
members. “The reaction has been
amazing. We love the neighborhood so
much. From day one we felt part of the
Astoria family,” they said.
