FOOD 8 | BOROMAG.COM | JANUARY 2014 Shumai from JJ’s Asian Fusion 37-05 31st Avenue • Astoria They start with a meatball made of tender chicken and crabmeat, then take the wonton wrapper and shred it into short strands, into which the meatballs are rolled. After steaming, they look like little koosh balls of pasta, but taste like absolute heaven. Panna Cotta from Il Bambino 34-08 31st Avenue • Astoria It isn’t even on the menu or website, and yet when I walk into the restaurant, it’s all I can think about. This insanely creamy coconut panna cotta sits in a pool of strawberry sauce, surrounded by chocolate coated cereal clusters, and it makes me very, very, very happy. Kimchi from The Queens Kickshaw 40-17 Broadway • Astoria This sandwich is so outrageous it is brilliant. Spicy fermented cabbage is layered with extra sharp cheddar, charred scallions, and slaw served on chocolate bread. It’s spicy and sweet, and brilliantly combines national dishes of Korea and America. Skate and Eggs from Snowdo nia 34-55 32nd Street • Astoria The Queens Kickshaw One of the greatest surprises of 2013 for me was actually this sandwich. I have never had a fish sandwich with such an explosive crunch give way to such delicious, tender, fish. Add the salty caper mayo and tangy beer pickles, and it is one of most incredible sandwiches I have ever tasted. Solomon Gundy from M. Wells St eak house 43-15 Crescent Street • Long Isla nd City Pickled smelt lay across potato waffles with crème fraiche, smothered in salty golden orbs of trout roe. It really is a simple dish, executed to perfection. And definitely one of the dishes I remembered most fondly. JJ's Asian Fusion Il Bambino M. Wells Steakhouse Snowdonia
