CYO of Long Island offers a variety of programs
for children of all ages including soccer, track,
swimming, volleyball, basketball, and chess.
Some of the programs are available to children
from kindergarten through the 12th grade. CYO
of Long Island was first established in 1958 and
the organization has grown immensely since
then. The programs now serve over 25,000
children a year across Long Island. CYO recently
started a new initiative called “CYO Steadfast”
that brings athletics to the children that need
it. The program also provides educational and
nutritional support for the children. Although
the CYO was established through the Diocese
of Rockville Centre, the organization offers
inclusive services to all children regardless of
culture and faith.
BEST ISLANDER
MATHEW BARZAL
Mathew Barzal has been a key player for the
New York Islanders ever since he joined the
team in 2015. The British Columbia native
has hockey flowing through his blood, playing
at both a national and international level for
several years even before joining and during
his time with the New York Islanders. As one
of the fastest skaters in the NHL, Barzal has
made many contributions to the team, including
scoring several points and making tons of
assists. He was the first to score a hat-trick
against the Maple Leafs since 1986, securing
him a spot in the team’s history. In 2021, Barzal
signed on to play three more years with the
team, so you can get to see him play in the latest
season games.

BOB NYSTROM
As a key player on the New York Islanders
when they won four straight Stanley Cup
championships between 1980 and 1983, Bob
Nystrom – also known by his nickname “Mr.
Islander” – is clearly one of the most beloved
Islanders of all time. The winning goal he scored
in overtime during Game 6 of the Stanley Cup
finals to give the team the first of those titles
certainly played a role in fans naming him Best
Islander this year. Nystrom joined the Islanders
in 1972 but his first full season with the team
was 1973-1974. He was selected to play in the
1977 NHL All-Star Game. Nystrom retired in
1986 after 900 games and his number, 23, was
retired in 1995.
BEST LONG
ISLAND DUCK
STEVE LOMBARDOZZI
This year, the Best Long Island Duck goes to
Steve Lombardozzi. The son of major league
player Steve Lombardozzi Sr., Lombardozzi
has baseball in his blood. After playing varsity
baseball for Atholton High School in Maryland,
Lombardozzi was playing for the Holyoke
Blue Sox in the New England Collegiate
Baseball League, was signed to the Washington
Nationals, and played with the Class A
Hagerstown Suns. After bouncing around the
MLB, Lombardozzi eventually landed on the
Long Island Ducks in 2019. During his time on
the team, Lombardozzi racked up a .329 batting
average with 83 RBIs, 20 stolen bases, and a
league-leading 90 walks during the 2021 season.
The following season, Lombardozzi was named
the Atlantic League Player of the Year. Though
he’s now a free agent, Lombardozzi will always
be a Long Island Duck in our hearts.
