CUNY’S SUPPORT
systems pave the way
to success in college
By Timothy G. Lynch My three siblings and I were raised
in public housing on the Upper
East Side in the 80s and 90s, in
the middle of the crack epidemic.
Murder rates were insane. Friends
and neighbors fell victim to
addiction or incarceration.
Things were tight in our strict, Irish Catholic
home. Our parents worked long hours. Dad was
an autoworker. Mom held different part-time
jobs. Neither finished high school. Nevertheless,
education was the foundation of our upbringing.
