“Joker”
Since his creation, the Joker has been getting
away with murder — and just about everything
else under Gotham’s sun. And now, DC Comics has
put out a plausible origin story for the villain; one
that explores what trauma the character endured
to go so mad. The movie has received mixed
reviews, though, with New York Times film critic,
A.O. Scott, describing it as an attempt at “secondrate
philosophizing,” while Forbes writer Mark
Hughes called Joaquin Phoenix’s performance
“fearless and stunning in its emotional depth and
physicality.” It seems the only way to decide if it
lives up to the hype is see it for yourself.
“A Beautiful Day in the
Neighborhood”
It may surprise you how much the new Mister
Rogers movie isn’t even about him at all. But
that’s what makes it work. A Beautiful Day in the
Neighborhood, starring Tom Hanks and Matthew
Rhys, follows the story of magazine writer Tom
Junod. Junod is a journalist who has developed
a bad reputation for cut-throat reporting, but
he receives a bit of grace when he is assigned a
feature on Mister Rogers. When you sit down to
watch this one, have your box of tissues handy-
you’re going to need them.
“Star Wars: the Rise of
Skywalker”
After 42 years, the Skywalker saga is coming
to an end. Daisy Ridley portrays Rey for the
conclusive chapter of the sequel trilogy in which
the character embarks on her final battle. Since the
movie series’ start, special effects have increased
dramatically, but the same classic charm that
R2D2 and C3PO brought to screens in 1977 exists
in the final installment.
