Movies to watch
as 2020 award
season approaches
IBy Samantha Wanderer n 2019, audiences and film critics alike favored realistic and true story films. Even the film
showing the life of a classic comic book villain features themes that resonate with real life.
“Based on a true story” dramas were especially popular this past year, with “The
Irishman,” “Ford v Ferrari,” and “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” performing well
at the box office. Not true, but realistic stories were also popular. “The Marriage Story” is
an example of one such film that mirrors real life, and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,”
although slightly far-fetched, is set in realistic 1969 Los Angeles.
With all those realistic films, there was a void for fantasy, which “The Rise of Skywalker,”
the final installment of the Star Wars franchise, aptly filled.
Netflix movies have stolen a spot in watchers’ hearts — and living rooms — in recent
years, and this year is no different. “The Marriage Story” and “The Irishmen” have both
already done well in early awards shows, which implies they’ll likely be serious contenders
at the Oscars.
With that said, here is a list of the movies you should see before the awards season
really kicks off.
“The Irishman”
It’s always tough keeping secrets from your
family-especially ones that involve working as a
hitman for a crime family. Having already won the
New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Film,
it seems like Netflix’s “The Irishman” is a shooin
for even more awards. The story stars Robert
De Niro as Frank Sheeran, a World War II veteran
turned truck driver turned organized crime hitman
for Jimmy Hoffa. The film spans 50 years and is 3.5
hours long, so get your favorite movie snack ready
and kick your feet up!
