e-GSE stakeholders meeting
Ports signals end to fossil-fuels
This was a meeting for Port to address the ground handlers, airlines
and associated service partners using fossil fuel vehicles on the upcoming
plans for the Port to begin to convert from these fuels to electric vehicles at
Port Airports. The Port is seeking comments on Commercially Available
equipment, and Operations and infrastructure impact of moving to electric
equipment. Port introduced initiatives last year and now has opened up the
dialogue between airport vehicle operators to comment on Port proposed
plans, targets, compliance and other issues which might impact the ability
for operators to conform to the rough plans that Port has issued. There are
operator concerns about financing, logistics, infrastructure, charging stations,
operational issues, commercial availability of adequate equipment
replacements and feasibility of current equipment and other matters that
could impact the Port initiative to Go-Green..
No detailed plans nor policies have been mandated by the Port, this
meeting was a n informational exchange on Port considerations with questions
and suggestions by the airport stakeholders. Port referenced plans include
100% electric airport shuttle bus fleet – one of the largest in the country
– $100 million in energy efficiency retrofits, and new renewable energy
initiatives across PA facilities
“By joining EV100, the Port Authority is sending a powerful message
that the shift to electric transport is gaining unstoppable momentum,” said
Amy Davidson, Executive Director of The Climate Group. “Switching to
electric vehicles for its fleet and airport buses will lower Port Authority’s
emissions and contribute to improving the quality of the air in the region –
showing thousands of travelers what a clean and electric future looks like.”
Last year the Port adopted interim target of 35% reduction in GHGs by
2025, long-term goal of 80% reduction by 2050. The Port Authority of New
York and New Jersey has become the first public transportation agency in
the United States to embrace the Paris Climate Agreement, setting aggressive
interim greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets that call for a 35-percent
reduction by 2025 and reaffirming the agency’s commitment to an
80-percent reduction by 2050.
