He plans to study mechanical engineering in college but has not yet chosen a school. BOOK CLUB SHARING THEIR LOVE OF READING IN HILLCREST Shown in the Hillcrest High School library are (l to r) are Januben Patel, who is in the school’s Health Careers Institute and volunteers period 5; and Phshpita Gupta, who is in the Pre-Med Institute and volunteers period 4. The girls do community service at nearby P.S. 86, helping ESL children do math and learn English by acting as assistant teachers. The Book Club provides the book to be read, which can be any kind of book, such as science fiction or mystery. STEM PRE-MED STUDENTS EXCEL IN QUEENS VILLAGE Sanjay Patel is the director of special programs at Martin Van High School (MVB H.S.), Queens Village, whose job is to recruit students and create partnerships with institutions where the students can do STEM research or take college courses. This is part of the Pre- Med Special Science Program at MVB H.S. It also involves reaching out to middle school students in the community. Patel often has students in the following programs, some of which provide school credit: the Health Professional Courses at York College in biology, medical technology, food and nutrition, and genetics. SOAR-ING TO EVEN GREATER HEIGHTS The Central Queens Y operates a school-based counseling program called S.O.A.R., which stands for Student Opportunities for Achievement & Readiness. Counselors operate in high school to do supportive counseling, academic support, crisis counseling, mediation, conflict resolution, social work and mental health counseling individually and in groups. The staff members are Alexandra Saba, LMSW, director and counselor; Farzana Rahman, MHC, counselor; Asha McKenzie, MSW, counselor; Savina Vavlas, intern counselor; and Omar Clarke, intern counselor. They work with 180 students whom they especially meet with after report card period to evaluate the grades. They also do career and college readiness with the students. (Photo by Bob Harris) TRADE FAIR PLANNING FOR THEIR FUTURE Shown are students from Benjamin Franklin High School for Finance & Information technology in the Campus Magnet Complex, Cambria Heights who attended a Queens Borough Wide College, Career & Trade Fair at York College. The trip was arranged by guidance counselor Charma White and teacher Elise Martini so the students could talk to college representatives and gather information about careers and colleges.
