THE HOT TOPIC TEN WISHES FOR 2017 When the ball finally drops at Times Square at midnight Saturday, millions will celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of the next. While many of us may welcome the end of a year marred by the loss of many great musicians and personalities, the dawn of 2017 doesn’t mean that the challenges we’ve faced in the last year will disappear. We have a wish list of some of the things we’d like to see in the new year. Here they are: 1. We hope our new president will defy expectations and take seriously the duties of the office he will enter on Jan. 20. A great many Queens residents want to be assured the next president upholds the Constitution that protects us all. 2. We hope the city elections coming up in the fall are far more civil than the last election cycle. We hope the voters show up at the polls with the same volume and spirit as the presidential election and that the choices made truly improve our great city and borough. 3. The MTA should come to its senses and figure out a way to balance its own budget without nickel-and-diming commuters. They won’t need to worry about raising fares if it provides better and timely services that spur ridership. 4. The state is installing cashless toll systems on the MTA bridges and tunnels. How about demolishing the toll booths at the Cross Bay Bridge — and getting rid of the toll there completely? 5. We hope our officials are listening to residents across the borough and will take action to significantly reduce noise from airplanes and helicopters flying overhead. 6. The city should move forward with real solutions to homelessness that don’t result in people being squeezed into every available hotel room in the borough. Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi’s plan to expand rental subsidies is a good start. 7. For the good of every New Yorker, let Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo resolve their differences and work together to improve the entire city. 8. May development and new business continue to flourish in Queens, but may there also be a concerted effort to ensure the borough becomes a more affordable place for everyone. 9. May the city continue to find places to build new schools so every child gets a proper, well-rounded education. 10. May you all find happiness, health and prosperity in the new year ahead. Celebrate with your loved ones and enjoy every thrill life has to offer!
