Sunnyside Shines, Sunnyside Drum Corps and community members are coming together for the 2014 holiday lighting ceremony. Instructor Miriam Acevedo will demonstrate merengue, salsa, cha cha, cumbia and reggaeton moves which, when combined into a workout, will help you feel more energetic. The clinic is conducted by the Queens Jazz OverGround. Members of the band will demonstrate jazz arrangements. Drum set, keyboard, bass amp and music stands will be provided. The clinic is followed by the Monthly Jazz Jam at 7 p.m. If you play jazz, you can jam with the band, and if you don’t play, you can just watch and listen. Tickets: $10 for general admission to the Jam/free for performers. The clinic admission is free. FREE UPCOMING LECTURE The Queens Museum is screening the classic fi lm “Trail of the Lonesome Pine” (1936), directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Henry Fonda. The screening is part of the museum’s Senior Film Series with Mark Ethan Toporek, which explores how communities infl uence the shaping of individual identities. “Trail of the Lonesome Pine” tells the story of two families whose enmity for each other is heightened when the railroad arrives at their village. The Poetry Open Mic & Show - The Risk of Discovery Reading Series begins at 8 p.m. with a workshop led by Micah Zevin. The MFTA will donate the materials, and participants can take their artwork home. No prior experience is necessary. Hunters Point South Crossing and Hunters Point Commons are nearing completion on the Long Island City waterfront. With 924 new affordable housing units, 738 apartments will be reserved for moderate income families and 186 will be for low income families. Preference in the lottery will be given to current residents of Community Board 2 as well as to municipal employees and individuals with disabilities. Apartments in the development are available via a lottery being conducted now by the New York City Housing Development Corporation. Families can apply by going to the NYC Housing Connect website (www.nyc.gov/housingconnect). The deadline to apply is December 15th. Sunnyside Community Services will host an information session for community members to learn how to access this opportunity. The event is free and open to the general public. It will take place on Monday, December 1 at 6:30 pm at Sunnyside Community Services, 43-31 39th St in Queens. Following the event, the organization will provide ongoing assistance to families completing the application. The information session is just one of many initiatives Sunnyside Community Services has led to promote this opportunity in the community, leading up to the Dec 15 deadline.
