When Sidney Gerson first opened in front of the World’s Fair in 1938, his store was originally meant to be a simple curtain shop. Because he only had space for a relatively small sign, his shop became known simply as, “The Fair.” However, as the years went on, The Fair went on to become something much more. Now, 75 years later, The Fair is not only an iconic Queens location, but a shining example of what a family owned business can achieve. As time progressed, The Fair expanded not only in size, but in terms of its merchandise. In 2006, it moved to The Shops at Atlas Park, and with the help of Sidney’s sons, Fred and David Gerson, The Fair went from being a tiny store that sold curtains to a one-stop shopping location for everyone’s home needs. “We carry the finest merchandise from the world’s most trusted manufacturers,” said Jake Gerson, son of Fred Gerson. “Although much has changed in terms of our merchandise and locations, what hasn’t changed is our dedication to our founder’s principles of quality, value and service. We take pride in being one of the last and best of the ‘mom and pop’s.’” Today, The Fair offers a wide range of linens, giftware, and everything from ready-made kitchen curtains and draperies to custom-made blinds, shades and complete window treatments. It also offers shop-at-home and installation services. As a longstanding and proud member of Queens, The Fair is also very active in the community. It eagerly helps local schools and organizations with fundraising and other community events, and Fred Gerson was one of the founding members of the Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District in the early 1970s. “We are now serving our third generation of customers and looking forward to providing you with everything you need for your home,” said Jake Gerson. “My father and brother Danny take a lot of pride in hearing from our third and fourth generation customers, and hearing stories of how many of them have fond memories of shopping here with their parents and grandparents.” The Fair is located at 71-03 80th Street in Glendale.
