Following an investigation, the individuals were identified as 42 year-old Matthew Smith and 39-year-old Elena Makarova. Smith was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide and assault with intent to cause physical injury. Makarova has not yet been apprehended. The NYPD released a video last week of the suspects wanted in connection with the June 26 assault that took place around midnight at the corner of Queens Boulevard and Main Street. Law enforcement sources said 64-year-old Patrick Gorman of Main Street in Briarwood was standing at the intersection when an unidentified male approached him. The suspect then punched Gorman in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. The unidentified suspect fled the scene with an unknown female. Officers from the 107th Precinct responded to the scene along with EMS units. Gorman, who suffered slight head trauma, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital. He was later removed and transferred to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Jamaica man convicted of viciously beating off-duty cop outside Ozone Park restaurant By Robert Pozarycki [email protected]/@robbpoz He beat an off-duty cop within an inch of his life, and now a Jamaica man will be looking at some serious jail time. On Wednesday, Nov. 2, jurors convicted Hayden Holder, 32, of brutally assaulting the officer outside an O z o n e Park rest a u r a n t n e a r l y t h r e e years ago after getting into a verbal argument with the victim inside a Queens nightclub. According to trial testimony, Holder — a resident of 102nd Avenue in Jamaica — got into a verbal dispute with Sergeant Mohamed Deen outside Club Maracas on Jamaica Avenue in Richmond Hill at 4 a.m. on the morning of Nov. 17, 2013. Thirty-five minutes later, prosecutors said, Holder encountered Deen again outside the St. John’s Express Bar & Restaurant at 118-14 Liberty Ave. in Ozone Park. Holder followed Deen back to his car, where the sergeant’s wife was waiting, then attacked him. Law enforcement sources said Holder punched the victim and knocked him to the ground, then repeatedly kicked him in the head, knocking the sergeant unconscious. The defendant then grabbed Deen’s head and slammed it against the pavement. Officers from the 106th Precinct and EMS units responded to the incident. Deen was rushed to a local hospital; he suffered a traumatic brain injury, multiple facial f r a c t u r e s and a knee injury. Brown noted, Deen experienced headaches and double vision. “A jury weighed all the evidence and convicted Holder in the brutal beating of an off-duty police officer who was so severely injured he could not resume work for approximately four months,” Brown said in a statement on Thursday, Nov. 3. Holder was arrested shortly after the assault and initially charged with attempted murder; those charges were later reduced. After a two-week jury trial, Holder was convicted of first-degree assault and faces up to 25 years behind bars. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 16. Maspeth and Jamaica residents arrested for Queens burglary pattern targeting the elderly By Anthony Giudice [email protected] @A_GiudiceReport Three individuals — one from Maspeth and another from Jamaica — who plagued four Queens precincts by burglarizing elderly people in their homes have finally been caught, law enforcement sources said. According to police, on Aug. 26, investigators from the NYPD’s Financial Crimes Task Force arrested the trio connected to the burglary pattern within the confines of the 104th, 110th, 111th and 115th precincts. The individuals would target elderly persons by posing as utility workers, or they used children in order to gain entry in their victims’ homes, cops said. Once inside, the thieves would remove property from the residences. Pursuant to an ongoing investigation, the New York Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance with information about similar incidents or may have come in contact with these individuals.
