Congresswoman Grace Meng has sent a letter addressed to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Robert Califf requesting the agency examine the use of colorants in feminine hygiene cosmetics as well as enforce more accurate labeling by manufacturers. The FDA currently considers feminine hygiene products, including washes, as “externally applied” products, allowing manufacturers to include colorants that are either only approved for external cosmetics or are approved for all cosmetics but are not required to be labeled on products. “Many women have complained of skin irritation, rashes and other side effects from using feminine cosmetic items that contain colorants,” Meng said. “That is why the FDA must require makers of these products to eliminate colorants that stand to do harm. Women should no longer be putting potentially harmful chemicals into their bodies.” Meng asks that the FDA address the problem by recognizing that feminine hygiene products are not “externally applied” and that they update labeling and ingredient listing requirements asked of manufacturers. The letter echoes requests submitted to the FDA by Women’s Voices for the Earth — a women’s advocacy organization that focuses on removing chemicals and toxins from consumer products — on August 2015 which requested the agency issue a “safety guidance” on colorants in such cosmetics. According to the release by Meng, the group has yet to hear back from the agency. “Aside from aesthetics, the use of colorants in feminine wash serves no purpose in these products,” said Alexandra Scranton, director of science and research at Women’s Voices for the Earth. “Instead, they are exposing women to unnecessary, additional health risks — risks already recognized by the FDA.” Holiday Celebrations SMALL BUSINESS & OFFICE PARTIES Private rooms available for parties with 30-80 guests.
