Queens College Evening Readings Series Presents Acclaimed Authors to
Its 2018 Fall Season, Including Pulitzer Prize-Winning Writer Jennifer Egan
This fall the prestigious Queens
College Evening Readings series will
present Pulitzer Prize-winning author
Jennifer Egan, leading Louis Armstrong
researcher and historian Ricky Riccardi,
and New York Times bestselling author
James Kaplan.
Founded in 1976, the series features
award-winning authors who do a
reading and participate in a moderated
discussion and Q&A with the audience.
The series has featured: Arthur Miller,
Doris Lessing, Toni Morrison, Salman
Rushdie, Edward Albee, E.L Doctorow,
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jhumpa
Lahiri, Mona Simpson, Zadie Smith,
Susan Sontag, Jonathan Safran Foer,
and Junot Diaz, among many other
prominent authors.
This year’s readings will highlight
the complex art of music writing, from
definitive biographies of beloved
musical icons; to new findings related
to the lives and careers of international
artists; to fiction writing about rock
bands in a future time.
On October 23rd, James Kaplan
will revisit his acclaimed biographical
series on Frank Sinatra and discuss
his upcoming book Irving Berlin: New
York Genius. The first volume of his
Frank Sinatra series Frank: The Voice
was chosen by former New York Times
chief book critic Michiko Kakutani as
one of her Top Ten Books of 2010.
On November 13th, Ricky Riccardi,
the director of research collections for
the Louis Armstrong House Museum,
will discuss the last 25 years of the life
and career of Louis Armstrong from his
book, What a Wonderful World: The
Magic of Louis Armstrong’s Later Years.
On December 11th, Jennifer Egan
will talk about her novel A Visit from
the Goon Squad, which won the 2011
Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics
Circle Award, and the Los Angeles
Times book prize. Her new novel,
Manhattan Beach, published last fall,
has been awarded the 2018 Andrew
Carnegie Medal for Excellence in
Fiction and was longlisted for the
National Book Award.
The series takes place on select
Tuesdays during the academic year
at LeFrak Concert Hall and is open
to the college community and the
general public. Queens College staff
and students get two free tickets with
CUNY ID. Funding for this program
has been provided by the Office of
the President/Queens College, the
Office of the Provost/Queens College,
New York Community Bank, the NYC
Department of Cultural Affairs and Mr.
Matthew Watson.
