44 The Courier SUN • OCTOber 16, 2014 for breaking news visit www.couriersun.com VICTORIA SCHNEPS-YUNIS vschneps@gmail.com The ‘kings’ reigned in Brooklyn As our Kings of Kings County made their way to the stage, their smiles were as bright as the full moon that night. I was so happy to see the joy on their faces as each man received a well-earned “Vicki” statue for their accomplishments. It added to the night that our impeccably dressed “King” of Brooklyn, Borough President Eric Adams, took a photo with each honoree. For years, my events team has been doing the Top Women in Business so successfully that their male counterparts asked for an event for them. So it was born! Then we realized there were many young people making a mark in our business, civic, and religious worlds, and so we created an event to recognize people under 40. We call the event Rising Stars. This weekend I had the opportunity to find the WIN station managed by Oprah Winfrey. She had a wonderfully informative and sensitive interview with the enormously talented award-winning actress Cecily Tyson. She spoke about her professional and personal lives, and I was struck by one of her statements: “We are put on earth to serve each other.” I have always felt that way, and to hear this very thoughtful person say it was a powerful moment for me. Professionally I feel the responsibility to serve my communities, and I’m so grateful that I have a team that helps me make it possible. When we honor people with our events, it’s possible because of Amy, Demetra, Lori, Jackie, Paula and Graziella, our events team. I am so proud of them and their hard work to make everyone we recognize feel special because they are! The Grand Prospect Hall where Alice and Michael Halkias “Make Dreams Come True” did it for us as we and they greeted the hundreds of people who filled their historic space in Park Slope. Not only did I have the pleasure of making the many men we recognized proud, but I did it with the help of our Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and also the charming and fun Channel 5 reporter Antwan Lewis. What a night! Fox 5 anchor Antwan Lewis, Victoria Schneps, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Joshua Schneps Looking forward to our Latino stars where we are recognizing the successful people across our city from that “world.” Stay tuned! Kayaking on a sunny Sunday at the LIC flea The skies rained on me all day Saturday, so when I woke to shiny, sunfilled skies on Sunday, I agreed to go with my daughter Elizabeth and darlings Jonah and Addison to visit the LIC flea and have lunch by the Anable Basin overlooking the Manhattan skyline. While I was sampling the Queens beers at the LIC Beer Garden, I saw that the volunteers for the LIC boathouse were offering free rides on their many kayaks just on the other side of the fence from the Beer Garden. I had kayaked for years and always loved the peaceful feeling of being on the water. The paddling was easy since the water of the basin was calm and quiet, so when 6-year-old Jonah asked me with excitement in his voice, “Grammy, can we go kayaking?” I said, “Sure, let’s do it!” We made our way down to the dock and got into a bright red kayak for two, Jonah in the front seat me just behind him with his oars being perfectly sized for his little body. Mine had a scoop that made my rowing and guiding the kayak easy. We stayed in the basin although the other kayakers rode out into the East River. Jonah and I had it all to ourselves as we made our way around the narrow inlet. We saw a dark brown lonely duck that seemed to come out of nowhere. We followed him, paddling closer and closer, but as soon as we did get close the duck flapped his wings and flew off. But we just followed him again. The sun was shining brightly and warmed us as we happily paddled along. There was a man in a single kayak coming our way, and I said, “Isn’t this fun?” and he responded by saying, “Who would believe we are kayaking in the heart of New York City!” How true. What fun! A wonderful way to end the weekend. On to a great week recognizing Latino star victoria’s secrets tweet me @vschneps Jonah and I got into a bright red kayak for two and kayaked in the Anable Basin Dynamic $1000 off Lumineers $500 off Invisalign DENTAL WORK Free Whitening included the inViSiBle WAy to Some excluSionS Apply StrAighten teeth third generation dentist 175-15 Jamaica avenue, Jamaica 718-297-4100 • 718-297-4106
