BY ED HORN
The world is an amazing and
diverse collection of people and
landscapes. The views we have of
the terrain and differences within the
USA provide a glimpse into the
marvels of what is beyond our borders.
TV has opened our vision of
the multitude of places and variety
of traditions that reflect every region
of the globe. Broadcasts allow many
of us to be armchair visitors to
strange and faraway places.
Simply by flipping through the
hundreds of channels offered by
cable we could visually fly over
rivers, mountains, continents and the
inhabitants of these places while sipping
coffee. But perhaps our dreams
are rewarded or punished by the visions
that enter our homes nightly.
Yet to some of us, the need to
experience the world first-hand is
too alluring not to board a plane
seeking the adventure by actually
being there! It is sometimes exciting,
other times disappointing, but to
go where our imaginations have
only created pictures in our minds is
an elixir that must be quaffed.
My wife and I have traveled to
so many places over the happy years
we have been together and have
never abandoned the journey. Many
of our visits have been to the tried
and true destinations that have, and
always shall, draw visitors.
We have been on a Li River
cruise watching bamboo boats with
their fishermen and diving birds
fishing. We have stayed in yurts in
Outer Mongolia and stepped across
the threshold of the Khan’s Xanadu.
Armed Chinese soldiers were prepared
to shoot us when our inebriated
guide was unable to provide a
password.
We have been to places that we
had been before and would return to
and there are those that have definitely
been removed from our itinerary
for all time. More so, there are
places demanding a check mark,
photos, and more importantly, memories.
St. Michael’s has provided the
means to reach out to the curious,
foreign places that many have fantasized
about, had questions and
ideas about that may be justified or
which reality would rebuff.
St. Michael’s will offer
throughout the year cultural travelogues
of foreign destinations.
Videos and knowledgeable individuals
will lead each episode. The
doors of St. Michael’s are open to
those who wish to see the world and
share the journey.
