Oct. 12 is the second-most important day of the year in New York City.
Th at’s the deadline for residents to register to vote in order to participate in
this year’s all-important Nov. 6 election.
Everyone’s talking about the state of the country today, with two passionate
sides going at it over issues of various importance — health care, tax
reform, foreign policy, Supreme Court justices, the list goes on and on.
Talk is everywhere — on social media, on 24-hour news channels, around
the dinner table and on the street. Everybody has an opinion on the important
issues of the day, the man occupying the White House and the people in
Washington and Albany tasked with representing us.
But talk is meaningless without action. Th e greatest action we can take is
voting. And if you’re not registered to vote, you can’t participate in the election.
If you have never voted before, or if you just moved and need to change
your address, you need to register or re-register by tomorrow in order to vote
on Nov. 6. Go to vote.nyc.ny.us to download a voter registration form. You
can even register online at the state Department of Motor Vehicles website.
All registered voters need to come out on Nov. 6 and cast their ballots.
Make your plans now. It only takes a few minutes, but the impact of your
vote can last a lifetime.
Nobody cared like Frank
Frank Padavan served the residents of northeast Queens for nearly 40 years
in the state Senate — an astounding incumbency by any measure, and proof
of just how highly his constituents regarded him.
Padavan died this week and was mourned by Democrats and Republicans
alike for his incredible service and dedication not just to the communities he
represented, but to the entire borough and New York state. He wasn’t perfect,
as no politician is, but he got the job done for his district.
For years, he used the campaign slogan, “Nobody cares like Frank.” Every
issue, large and small, was important to Padavan — whether it was opening
new schools in the district (one is named in his honor) or protecting the
many important cultural institutions of the borough.
You could go to his offi ce with a problem, and Padavan and his staff made
sure to take action. It’s the most basic requirement an elected legislator has;
the record shows that he not only met that requirement, he exceeded it.
We wish that more elected offi cials today, on every level, could demonstrate
the civility and level of care that Padavan provided his constituency.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Padavan family, his friends and all
those who worked with him.
