From relishing my grandson Hudson’s second birthday, taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, being interviewed on cable live TV with the effervescent Aurelia, a visit to our new Beer Garden at the LIC Flea, several birthday celebrations, a unique musical performance at Queensborough Community College, and finally a successful UJA dinner dance at the North Shore Towers. Yes, I was at each, and yes, I relished each one. I had been challenged by Lois Christie of Christie & Co. Salon in the Bay Terrace shopping center to take the ALS challenge after she had been challenged. I in turn had challenged Mary Hughes, the vice president of leasing at Cord Meyer Development LLC. So, with the sun shining outside Christie & Co. Salon, Mary and I got dumped on with icy water. It was a shocking feeling but luckily I was covered enough to only come out of it with a soaked head. Within minutes I was in the salon getting a real head wash, blowout and makeup application to get ready for my TV interview, a QPTV show with the lively interviewer Aurelia. On Saturday, I visited the LIC Flea to taste the beers now being served at the new beer garden. We just got our liquor license, and I ate lunch from the food selections of the international food vendors. I sampled the beers with my meal sitting with the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. There’s no better scenic place for lunch. That night, I had the honor of celebrating the birthday of a great man who also appreciates family. The love surrounding Joe Mattone on his 83rd birthday was hard to match since he has 28 grandchildren from his eight children! They all paid tribute to a stunningly successful self-made man, with the added pleasure of seeing our governor, Andrew Cuomo, who was there to wish him well, too. I told Joe — and I believe it’s true for all of us — that children are our legacy, our footprint on Earth forever. May he live a thousand years! The next day was 2-year-old Hudson’s belated birthday party in a play space overlooking the East River in Williamsburg where he lives with my beloved son Josh and Hudson’s treasured mom, Tracey. What fun to see all the cousins enjoying each other again after being together at our week away at the Dreams hotel in the Dominican Republic. On Sunday, I experienced a power blast — the unique voice and talent of Patti LuPone, who performed her one-woman show, “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda,” at the sold-out Queensborough Performing Arts Center. Susan Agin, the extraordinary executive and artistic director of the arts center, has for years filled the 875- seat theatre at Queensborough Community College to rave reviews of multiple shows each year. This past Sunday was no different. I had the pleasure of being enchanted by Ms. LuPone’s performance. As an added bonus I met many people from the community, including dear friends and colleagues, including Councilman Daniel Dromm with his beautiful mom, CB 2’s Debby Markell, my own Sheila Levy, a decades-long member of the Courier team, Sandy Delson from Transitional Services for New York Inc. and staff from Woodhaven’s BID. My smile couldn’t be erased as people came up to me to tell me how much they enjoy reading our newspapers and how grateful they are to the college for bringing such quality programming to the community. They were right — Patti LuPone brought the house down with a standing ovation that brought her back for one more song. She sang it without a microphone with words of wisdom that I wish I could bring to you word for word. The message is that in a hundred years, the things that seem so important, from having a million dollars or material things, will all wilt away, but what lasts forever is love! It really resonated with me. Although the love of my life, Stu, is gone, the love of my family and friends sustains me. Next week, I’ll share the story of the brave Israeli/American soldier who lost his arm fighting to protect Israel. He was the lead speaker at the sold-out North Shore Towers UJA fundraising dinner dance. Patti LuPone performed her one-woman show, “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda,” at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center. Hudson celebrating his second birthday.
