The Alchemy of Caroline Bergonzi.
http://www.carolinebergonzi.com/
Once upon a time, in a micro principality, and in the lineage of Italian
violinmakers, an artist was born. From Monaco to Paris to Manhattan,
from drawing to painting to portraits to metal sculpture, right after the
funeral of her father, her mystic path unfolds. Art first. Fire, metals, air
and gravity, involving a great deal of focus, time, heat, fusion, brazing,
casting, welding, wrestling and shaping, from small to monumental
public installations. For the past decade, Caroline Bergonzi has confronted
the elements and found her voice, her unique style. The alchemist
transforms flat sheets of metals into timeless universal treasures, often
as symmetric phoenix or concentric mandalas, both symbols of birth,
death and rebirth.
From her recent encounter with Richard Mazda comes a new solo show.
“Ashes to gold” reveals a great selection of her sculptures, framed with
key paintings that announced what was coming, years before she
entered a welding shop.
The exhibition will be held just across the East River from Manhattan in
Long Island City, Queens, at the LIC Arts Open Gallery at The Factory
LIC. The management team at The Factory has generously donated this
space to LIC Arts Open for hosting shows throughout the year, as well as
providing additional gallery space for the annual LIC Arts Open festival.
