Here are some brushingand beyond tips to help prevent oral health problems down the road. Preventative care is imperative. Basic hygiene practices can help maintain the health of your mouth. Remember to: Regularly brush with toothpaste, floss and visit your dentist. Brush at least twice a day. Purchase a brush with soft bristles and make sure to use light pressure while brushing so you don’t wear away tooth enamel. A great option is a battery-powered toothbrush. Pay attention to your toothbrush. Does it need to be replaced? A good rule is to purchase a new toothbrush every three to four months. Speak with your dentist about best brushing and flossing practices, as well as the recommended number of visits to the dentist’s office each year. The number of necessary visits may vary depending on specific patient needs. Preventing enamel loss. Consuming too many acidic foods or soft drinks, and a long list of other factors, can weaken enamel. Enamel loss can lead to cavities, tooth sensitivity, discoloration and other oral health problems. To help maintain your tooth enamel, try to avoid drinks such as soda and fruit juices, and foods such as those high in citric acid or sugar content whenever possible. When to call the dentist. Between dental visits, patients may experience symptoms of oral health problems. Make sure you call a doctor if you notice: • Tooth pain • Tooth decay or cavities • Receding gum lines • Bleeding of the gums • Increased tooth sensitivity • Discoloration of teeth • Lumps on the lip or in the mouth or throat To learn more about how to protect your teeth, visit www.myoralcare.com. Courtesy of Family Features Bringing You Advancements in Prostate Cancer Treatment Long Island Radiation Therapy is pleased to welcome Alan J. Katz, M.D., Radiation Oncologist Dr. Katz has practiced Radiation Oncology for over thirty years. He received a B.A. from Yale in 1973 and an M.D. from NYU in 1977. His residency in Radiation Oncology at NYU was completed in 1981 and he later received a J.D. from NYU in 1993. From 1991-1993, Dr. Katz was the Acting Chairman of Radiation Oncology at Montefiore Medical Center of the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. From 1993-2010, he was the Director of Radiation Oncology at Winthrop-University Hospital on Long Island. During that time, he developed a program utilizing the CyberKnife to treat prostate cancer with just 5 large focused doses of radiation, as opposed to the traditional 45 treatments. Over the last five years, he has published many peer reviewed papers pertaining to the results that this innovative treatment has yielded. Most recently, he has published an article in the May 2013 edition of Radiation Oncology, which reported excellent six year results, superior to that reported with the standard 45 fractions. He has lectured on this treatment and taught other physicians throughout the globe, including Asia, Latin America and Europe. Dr. Katz has presented his data several times at the largest national meeting in radiotherapy, called ASTRO. Dr. Katz is now offering this treatment at Long Island Radiation Therapy. Using both the TomoTherapy machine in Lake Success and the Rapid ARC machine in Garden City, he is treating localized prostate cancer with five fractions. Because these machines have built-in CAT scans for localization, patients will not generally need placement of fiducial markers, making this procedure completely non-invasive. The speed with which these treatments can be done is also remarkable, averaging 15 minutes per day rather than the 45 minutes with the CyberKnife.
