You will have the time of your life watching the amazing artists in “Pippin,” an award winning revival of the play that launched Ben Vereen’s career in the 1970s. Last week I had the pleasure of taking my daughter Elizabeth to experience it with me. The producers have put together a remarkably talented group of artists whose voices make your mouth drop, whose dancing takes your breath away, and extraordinarily talented circus performers. It’s an unbeatable combination that left me singing the songs and smiling with unrestrained joy. In all my years of theatregoing I’ve never seen the audience stand, stop the show and give wild applause. They did it for Andrea Martin, who won the Tony for her stunning performance. The “grandma” of “Pippin,” Martin, 66, dances like a kid in the chorus and sings her heart out while twirling in the air on a trapeze. Everyone in the audience was stunned to watch such a masterful performance. I agree with theatre critic David Rooney, who labelled Martin’s performance “the most joyously exhilarating five minutes of stage time on Broadway.” I also love the song she belts out as a sing-along with the audience, “No Time At All.” Its words ring true: “Oh, it’s time to start livin’/ Time to take a little from this world we’re given.” As the Tony Award-winning actress explains in the playbill, “I don’t feel like my life is over and I feel everyday is a time to start living.” I believe that too DARLING HUDSON TURNS ONE! It’s hard to believe a year has passed since “my baby,” Josh, now my partner in business, and wife Tracey had a darling little boy named Hudson. And this weekend was his first birthday at a perfect party place for little toddlers, “Frolic” in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, near Josh and Tracey’s apartment. The memory of Hudson, who started walking a week ago, moving, dancing and swaying to the live band at his party will linger forever in my mind. And then there were his cousins, sevenyear old Blake, his sister Morgan and Jonah with his two-year-old sister Addison, frolicking away on the slides and jumping toys, climbing and then running in and out of the “caves” and tunnels. There was a three-piece band consisting of a drummer, electric piano player and a guitarist entertaining the children, but for me watching four-year-old Jonah standing on the stage with the performers playing a kid-size guitar and seeing Hudson’s wide smile was the treat of all treats. It brought tears to my eyes to see Josh’s friends, many from sixth grade — now grown men with their own children — kissing and hugging each other with the love that only old friends can share. It made my heart swell! For some reason it’s a tradition for a baby to make a giant mess while eating his first birthday cake. Based on the job Hudson did, he was a huge success. But for me, he was a success the day he was born! A WEDDING DAY TO TREASURE For almost two decades Adele Udell, my unabashed “call girl” has been breaking sales records by building relationships with clients at our newspapers — all done over the telephone. Well last week she built the most important relationship of all: she gained a daughter-in-law as she walked down the aisle with her beloved son Bradley. She and her husband Jay proudly brought a new relation into their world at a fabulous, elegant wedding. The bride and groom danced the night away with friends and family cheering them on. May they share a glorious life together. Now Adele finally has a daughter! Hudson playing the drums at “Frolic,” where we held his party. Josh and Hudson look on as cousin Jonah plays with the band. Jay and Adele Udell with the happy, newly married couple: son Bradley and daughter-in-law Sandy.
