Broadway Silk Store was a fabric store for many years, up until recently when White and her daughter Eleanna decided to incorporate vintage items, like jewelry and household knick-knacks. The most popular items sold at the LIC Flea are jewelry and “dictionary art prints that have a whimsical feel to them,” says White. “The Flea has been a great experience, because it’s a family experience. There’s a great feeling of community, and it’s nice being involved with the neighborhood.” Mundo www.mundoastoria.com Before closing last year, Mundo Astoria was a beloved restaurant that was open for eight years. Partners Canalp (Jon) Caner and Guillermo (Willie) Lucerosabbi decided to take a break from the restaurant business and start something new; they are now doing catering, private events and of course, participating in the LIC Flea. Mundo Astoria was known for its delicious organic foods, specifically the signature Red Sonja dish: red lentil patties wrapped in lettuce leaves, which you can taste at the flea. Though they do specialize in organic meats as well, the food offered by Mundo Astoria at the flea is strictly vegetarian/vegan. “We’re very excited about sharing flavors with people,” says Caner. “We’ve been seeing a lot of old customers from the restaurant at the flea.” Popitbaby www.popitbaby.com An escape from the “oppressive heat” of the summer is here with Popitbaby’s organic popsicles. Partners Jackie Walsh and Christopher Twele have been working for over a year on their popsicle project, sending out their first popsicle truck just a month ago. All of their products are created at Organic Food Incubator, a site with 16 different kitchens all using and producing organic products. Pop It Baby offers unique, refreshing flavors, such as watermelon mint, mojito, chai tea, honeydew basil blueberry and much more. Twele and Walsh’s trucks can be found throughout Long Island City, and they are ecstatic to be a part of the LIC Flea. “I think Long Island City is the perfect place for a market,” said Twele. LIC FLEA: ‘Flip’ & FUN BY LIAM LA GUERE [email protected] The circus is coming to town, but first it stopped by the LIC Flea and International Food Bazaar over the weekend. The Big Apple Circus made an appearance at the Flea to promote its upcoming shows to potential Tornato A new twist on the potato BY LIAM LA GUERE [email protected] Jun Sung Lee is hoping make his American Dream a reality, but with a Korean twist. Lee, 42, is dipping into the French fries market with a snack he calls Tornato, a twisted potato on a skewer. Tornato is made through a special machine that Lee has the patent for. The machine screws the potato in such a way that it becomes a spiral. He said that the Tornato is a popular treat in Korea and it could become popular here as well. “People like things that are different,” Lee said. When Lee first thought of the idea, he began researching potato consumption in America. He realized that not only is the potato used in many American dishes, it is also the second most popular vegetable in America. Lee started selling the Tornato at flea markets, including the LIC Flea and International Food Bazaar. The sticks that he uses to skewer the Tornato are imported bamboo from China. To accompany the new snack he also makes sugarless smoothies and bubble tea. Lee envisions that he will be able to make a meal with the Tornato and add meats like chicken to the potato snack. He also began making spirals of other vegetables, including beets. To further realize his dream, Lee wants to franchise a store or hopes that a company will buy his idea and starting selling it. He believes that it can sell in malls, or even for parties and schools. “My dream is to sell to a big company,” Lee said. “That would be the best.” patrons and provide a little entertainment. HGTV’s show “Flea Market Flip,” where contestants are given about $500 to search for items, revitalize them and resell for a profit, was also at the Flea this weekend with host Lara Spencer. “Rather than just taste the different foods, we can take in the entertainment too,” said Flea-goer Landy Wu. “The kids always like the circus. If there is an opportunity I will bring them.” The Big Apple Circus will be playing shows at Lincoln Center from October 25 through January 12. The circus also gave free tickets to the show with a free raffle. “We are so excited; my son has been talking about the Big Apple Circus all week,” said Long Island City resident Lindsy Parrott. “There are so many kids in the neighborhood I think it’s smart for the LIC Flea to capitalize on the demographic and bring this to get the kids excited to come to the Flea with their parents.” Manolo Blank, a self-defined ironic mime, represented the circus with small performances. The mime, who is also a clown, walked on stilts, juggled, told jokes and danced, to the excitement of children. “It’s awesome, I am enjoying the mime’s character,” said Melqueuoroziry Capellan.
