Forever I am a girl and so are my friends. I think it’s okay to feel forever young. Why not? My philosophy is to live each day to the fullest, and did I do that this weekend. On Saturday, I spent a few precious hours with my grandson Blake at Tyler Hill, a sleepaway camp in Pennsylvania. Even though he broke a toe a week before, it didn’t seem to slow him down or lessen his big smile. After leaving him, I drove to see my friend Linda DeSabato at her upstate hideaway! She had invited me to see the “odd couple”: 89-year-old Tony Bennett belt out songs with 29-year-old Lady Gaga by his side. The chemistry between them was electrifying. I had relished their performance at Radio City Music Hall, but I can never get enough of brilliant performers and they both are that! Linda has a house upstate and my friends Margie and Rhona and I converged on her lakefront home to visit and spend Saturday night at Bethel Woods where the two legends performed. Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center was created with the help of people like Linda and her bus company, who believed the former site of the revolutionary festival/concert Woodstock could again bring people to the area. With a vision and support of the business community, a stunning amphitheater perched on a grassy knoll was built with multiple dining areas, a museum of memories from Woodstock, and multiple souvenir stands. Saturday night was picture-perfect with warm breezes, a clear sky and 80° temperatures as we sat in our box seats. We sat in our box seats and ordered dinner, selecting from the menu of six different hamburgers and appetizers from quesadillas to shrimp cocktails, but the soft pretzels were my favorite with cheese and fruit. In our box was a ledge to put my food and drinks on while watching the brilliant duo sing their hearts out. Tony Bennett wore the same cream-colored sports jacket with black pants and shirt throughout the nonstop hour and a half performance. But Lady Gaga wowed the soldout crowd with seven costume changes, each one more outrageous than the last. She sparkled in red beads, then came out in a slinky silver beaded gown, then a white feathered creation. Her costume designer could top Cher’s, whose costumes are spectacular, too! But their voices were what made the crowd go wild with repeated standing ovations for them singly and together. I’m looking forward to extending the pleasure by reliving the concert through their CD. The magnetic couple have been on a worldwide concert tour and their CD is number one worldwide! Tony made us laugh when he encouraged everyone “to buy it because Lady Gaga needs the money.” I’m happy to support such genius! Get a second opinion One of my well-informed friends shared with me her experience with an eye problem. Her saga is a lesson for all of us. Her eyes were tearing so she visited her eye doctor. He startled her by saying she must visit an oncologist eye doctor. That doctor told her she indeed had cancer of the eye, needing an operation that required her to wear a radioactive eye patch and be alone for a week. Enter friend Mary Ann Mattone. She became a superhero when she referred our friend to her son-in-law, who runs the ophthalmology department of a world-class hospital in Chicago. He recommended another doctor at Sloan Kettering. After a visit there to the third doctor, he told her she was fine. Not to worry. She does not have cancer! The lesson: always get second or third opinions before a lifechanging procedure!
