30 THE COURIER SUN • HEALTH • JULY 7, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com health Disabled runners can train in Queens for big race BY ALEC POSNER On Sunday, June 26, Achilles International runners and guides from across the globe came to Manhattan to participate in the Annual Hope and Possibility Race. Achilles, an organization whose goal it is to “bring hope, inspiration, and the joys of achievement to all,” holds the 4-mile race each year. In the past, Achilles members who live in Queens had to go all the way to Manhattan whenever they wanted to train for the event. But disabled athletes did not have to make that trek to train for this year’s big race. Wendy Phaff, an avid runner, founded a Queens chapter of Achilles International in January 2016 to get those who may not have been so keen on leaving the house to exercise beforehand to challenge themselves and meet new friends in the process. “I have come to know, respect and adore these amazing athletes who are helping me to make the Queens chapter strong. I have met remarkable athletes and guides who take time from their training schedules and lives to be there to make sure that our members have company along this journey,” Phaff said. Runner Jenny Hwang lives in Whitestone. Her experience with Achilles shows the impact it can have on an athlete’s life. “I never thought I would be able to run a mile,” Hwang said. “Also, it challenges me to do my best. Until I came to Achilles, I wasn’t very social. Achilles has given me a chance to meet friends and be more outgoing. I’m always looking forward to go running with Achilles.” LOOKING FOR CARE FOR YOU OR YOUR LOVED ONE?
