June 29 saw the annual Independence Day fireworks display over Fort Totten, sponsored by Councilman Paul Vallone and the Bayside Historical Society. Various entertainment acts delighted the gathering crowds before the pyrotechnic show began after sundown. The following night, on June 30, Astoria Park had its own wondrous fireworks display put on by the Central Astoria Local Development Corporation. Spectators gathered on the park’s great lawn to view the Grucci pyrotechnics shot high between the Robert F. Kennedy and Hell Gate bridges. The Queens Symphony Orchestra got everyone into a patriotic mood with their rendition of classic American tunes. Rain and clouds couldn’t dampen the celebration in Long Island City to celebrate the country’s 240th birthday on Monday, July 4. Hundreds of people waited out the passing storm — hiding under picnic blankets, trees, umbrellas and anything else they could find — along the East River at Hunters Point Park to watch the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks celebration. As day turned into night, the crowd watched as fireworks turned the night sky beautiful shades of red, blue, green and purple. The explosions from the fireworks echoed off the nearby buildings as the audience cheered and applauded the impressive display.
