Queens Caff eine, Part 4
Old meets new at Gossip Coff ee
BY LIZZ SCHUMER
Freelancers and coff ee addicts alike
know the importance of a good coff ee
shop. Th e best ones come with a perfect
balance of high-quality brew, something
to nosh on and a comfortable, welcoming
place to enjoy them. With the continued
popularity of third-wave coff ee —
that is, those who consider coff ee an art
in itself — Astoria residents have a range
of excellent options. I packed up my laptop,
threw on my best beanie, and set off
to raise my blood-caff eine levels in some
of the most unique environs Astoria has
to off er.

Gossip Coff ee’s red and white tiled
fl oors, red leather chairs, formica tables
and sweeping counter feel both retro and
fresh. I could spend an hour checking
out the tchotchkes lining the walls, and
I’m counting the days until it gets warm
enough to enjoy a cold brew on the back
patio. With enough space to camp out
without someone staring over your shoulder,
Gossip is great for just that.
Coff ee director Billy Brogan selects
all of the beans for Gossip’s Maspeth,
Queens, roastery. It doesn’t get much
fresher than that. As such, a regular pourover
is the pro move here. Don’t leave
without a bag of beans and a doughnut
(or a dozen). Gordon Ramsey declared
chef Scottish Francis the “doughnut
king” on “MasterChef” season 5, and
Francis has been earning that designation
ever since. Flavors change seasonally,
but you really can’t go wrong with
any of them.
