 “Saint Demetrios High School
 Celebrates its 40th Anniversary Class
 with POMP and CIRCUMSTANCE”
Commencement exercises were held at Saint Demetrios High
School on Friday, June 7, 2019. This year the high school proudly
celebrated its 40th Anniversary of providing a quality affordable
private parochial education to hundreds of students throughout
Queens, the other four boroughs, and Long Island. The Class of
2019 consisted of 38 students who have been accepted to
colleges /universities throughout New York State and the nation.
The keynote speaker was Dr. George D. Yancopoulos, M.D./Ph.D,
the President and CSO of REGENERON Pharmaceuticals, a leading
biotech corporation which has invented in its own laboratories
FDA approved medicines for the treatment of various cancers,
eye diseases, asthma, and arthritis. Dr. Yancopoulos eloquently
spoke about his heritage and his efforts as a student; he was the
valedictorian of Bronx High School of Science and at Columbia
University. Just as impressive, George Yancopoulos was a Westinghouse
Science Talent Search winner and is now the lead sponsor
of the REGENERON Science Talent Search (formerly known as
Westinghouse). Dr. Yancopoulos is considered one of the wealthiest
 Americans in Science/Business as ranked by FORBES magazine;
just as significant is the fact that Dr. Yancopoulos promotes
STEM and funds its programs for students at the elementary,
middle school, and high school grades.
The valedictorian for the Saint Demetrios Class of 2019 is Ms. Anna
Sarantis who will be attending the Saint John’s University College
of Pharmacy. The salutatorian is Mr. Dionysios (Dennis) Chatzitasi
who will be attending the NYU Tandon School of Engineering to
study Sustainability Engineering. Anna has been a student of the
Saint Demetrios School system since pre-kindergarten while
Dennis came to Saint Demetrios in the 9th grade after emigrating
from Athens, Greece. Both students gave moving speeches about
their time at Saint Demetrios and their hopes for the future.
