On the night of May 24 at approximately 7:30 p.m., a 12-year-old boy splashed himself with rubbing alcohol and set himself ablaze while standing in the bathtub in his home on Watjean Court at Far Rockaway, NY Post first reported. According to the reports, he wanted to extinguish the fire with water from the shower but wasn’t able to do so. Emergency units arrived at 7:46 p.m. and rushed the boy into Nassau University Medical Center Burn Unit in critical condition. He suffered thirddegree burns covering more than 40 percent of his body. The boy apparently burned himself as part of a daring game during which the participant is supposed to voluntarily set himself or herself on fire for a short period of time by applying flammable liquids. The incendiary act is then recorded on video and posted on social media. The first fire challenge video was uploaded on YouTube in 2012 and gained over 100,000 views according to the site KnowYourMeme. In 2014, a 15-year-old boy from Buffalo died during a fire challenge. GANG MEMBERS SENTENCED FOR KILLING MAN, DUMPING HIM IN FOREST PARK Two Brooklyn gang members will be spending years behind bars for kidnapping and murdering a Williamsburg man and dumping his body in Forest Park in 2012, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson announced on May 25. The defendants — identified by the DA’s office as Tramel Cuencas, 24, and Irving Gavin, 28, both of Warwick Street in East New York, Brooklyn, and members of the Elm Street Piru gang — were sentenced to 25 years to life in prison on Wednesday by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun. Cuencas was convicted on April 14, 2016, of two counts of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree robbery after a jury trial. Gavin was convicted on April 18, 2016, of firstdegree kidnapping and first-degree burglary by a separate jury. “These two defendants committed a brazen and heinous crime,” Thompson said. “They kidnapped a young man in broad daylight, in front of his family, and later slit his throat and took money, drugs and a car in payment for these heinous acts. They now deserve to spend many years in prison for their crimes.” According to trial testimony, Cuencas and Gavin forced their way into Thomas Dudley’s apartment and held him and three of his family members — including Dudley’s 8-year-old sister — at gunpoint on November 14, 2012. They then took approximately $10,000 from a safe inside the home. The defendants then tied Dudley’s hand and forced him into the back of a U-Haul truck. Dudley’s body was found the next day inside Forest Park with both wrists slashed and his throat cut “from ear to ear,” Thompson said. Cuencas and Gavin were arrested on November 19, 2012, after making incriminating statements admitting to the kidnapping and indicated that it was ordered by another gang member as retaliation for an alleged drug dispute. In exchange for kidnapping Dudley, the defendants expected to be paid in cash, drugs and a Jaguar. JAMAICA MAN COLLARED FOR KILLING CUOMO AIDE IN BROOKLYN The man wanted for the murder of Carey Gabay, a former aide to Governor Andrew Cuomo, in Brooklyn last Labor Day was arrested on May 27, police announced. According to law enforcement officials, Micah Alleyne, 24, of Van Wyck Expressway in Jamaica has been charged with murder, criminal possession of a firearm and reckless endangerment in connection to Gabay’s Sept. 7, 2015, murder. Gabay, who was preparing to take part in the West Indies Carnival that day, was shot in the head in front of 1680 Bedford Ave. as he was walking down the Brooklyn street, police said. He was taken to Kings County Hospital in critical condition; he succumbed to his injuries on Sept. 16. “Carey Gabay was an exemplary public servant who lost his life in a senseless tragedy,” Cuomo said in a statement. “Today’s arrest is a major step forward in the pursuit of justice for Carey’s family and loved ones. I commend the investigators and prosecutors for their tireless efforts to ensure those responsible for Carey’s death are held fully accountable for their actions.”
