Pierina Ana Sanchez, the New York director of the Regional Plan Association (RPA), spoke about a study of improving area marketing, a building analysis of underutilized real estate and efforts to upgrade public transit. The RPA is working on its fourth regional plan, and Sanchez hoped to convey the ramifications of the plan on the neighborhood. Pictured at the meeting are Reverend Patrick O’Connor, GJDC Nominations Committee; Peter Kulka, GJDC chairman; Sanchez; Hope Knight, GJDC executive director; and Elliot Sander, chairman of the GJDC Nominations Committee. WOODHAVEN POETS HONOR YOUNG WRITERS Photo courtesy of Christine Barbour Iron Horse Poetry, formerly the Woodhaven Poetry Society, recently sponsored a poetry contest at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Academy in Woodhaven. All students in grades two through eight were assigned to write a poem. Their teachers selected the best five entries for entry into the contest. Iron Horse members, all of whom are local poets themselves, picked the winners and presented their awards to them during a visit to the school on May 23. Christine Barbour, president of the Iron Horse Society, joined St. Thomas the Apostle Principle Joseph Carpenter in presenting the awards to first-prize winners Karen Paniagua, Hannah Daisamont and Yureidy Rodriguez; second-prize winners Andrew Jadan, Troy Watson and Justin Lowtan; third-prize winners Gabriella Agosto, Giovanni Ramirez and Brianna Martinez; and honorable mentions David Lizano, Azaria Adams and Gilliane Raz.
