A call to action to make our schools safer
A truly disturbing statistic began circulating
the internet in the wake of the latest
gun massacre in America — a shooting at
a Santa Fe, Texas high school in which a
lunatic with an assault rifl e mowed down
10 people.
According to Th e Washington Post,
as of May 18, the number of people who
died in school shootings (31) in 2018
exceeds the number of deaths among
active members of the U.S. military (29).
We cannot give up on the pursuit of
stronger gun laws in the United States
of America. We believe in the Second
Amendment, but in this country, we register
drivers and their vehicles. We should
also registering gun owners and weapons
the same way.
Nevertheless, something must be done
in the near-term to better protect our
children. Th e answer, we believe, is not
arming the teachers (as some have mindlessly
suggested), but rather expanding
the implementation and use of metal
detectors in our schools.
Expanding metal detectors and having
additional school safety offi cers operating
them adds an extra layer of security, giving
parents some reassurance that their
children are learning in a weapon-free
environment.
Not every New York City public school
has metal detectors, and of those that do,
only a select number are in active use every
day. But every school should have metal
detectors, and they should be used daily.
Funding must be provided from the
federal and state governments to ensure
that these devices are in use every day and
are properly staff ed.
We know that’s not a perfect solution
to the violence problem that we have.

Th e circumstances of our times, however,
demand that our city takes these additional
security measures to keep our kids
safe.
If metal detectors save one life, if they
prevent one shooter from killing innocent
people, then they have been worth
the eff ort.
We have to do something now. We
know “thoughts and prayers” won’t cut it.
To continue to do nothing is a sin against
us all.
We urge all of you to call the president,
the mayor, the governor and your
local representatives and demand that
they provide the resources to fund metal
detectors in our schools — and the courage
to enact registration of guns.
TAKE ACTION NOW!
Call your president and local lawmakers and urge them
to support funding for metal detectors in schools — and
stronger gun laws to prevent future violence!
