Serial phone snatcher
in Jamaica
Police are searching for a man who
snatched cellphones from passengers
at subway stations in Briarwood and
Jamaica.
Th e perpetrator has been linked to four
incidents in three weeks, according to law
enforcement sources. Th e details of each
incident are as follows:
• On April 18 at around 1 p.m., a 19-yearold
male victim was aboard a southbound
F train in the vicinity of Van
Wyck Boulevard and Briarwood Station.
When the train stopped and the doors
opened, the perpetrator grabbed the
phone out of the victim’s hands and fl ed
the station in an unknown direction.
• On April 20 at 5:30 p.m., a 31-year-old
female victim was riding a southbound
F train. When the train stopped at the
Parsons Boulevard station, the suspect
snatched the victim’s phone from her
hands and fl ed the station.
• On May 1 at around 10:30 a.m., a
43-year-old female victim was riding
a northbound F train in the vicinity of
the 169th Street station. When the train
stopped, the perpetrator grabbed the
victim’s cellphone and fl ed the station.
• On May 1 at 12:20 p.m., a 35-year-old male
victim was riding a southbound F train.
When the train stopped at the Parsons
Boulevard station, the suspect snatched the
victim’s phone and fl ed the station.
No injuries were reported in any of the
incidents. Each phone was estimated to be
worth $800 to $900.
Th e incidents were reported to the
107th Precinct.
Th e suspect is described as a black
male in his 20s, 5 foot 10 inches and 175
pounds. He was last seen wearing a black
jacket, black backpack and blue jeans.

Failed bank bandit
in Forest Hills
A would-be bandit in Forest Hills made
a quick wardrobe change aft er his bid to
rob a bank went wrong on the morning of
Tuesday, May 22, police said.
Th e failed caper occurred at 11:05 a.m.
on May 22 at the First Central Savings
Bank located at 71-66 Austin St.
Law enforcement sources said the
suspect walked into the branch wearing
a blue-and-white hooded sweatshirt,
gray sweatpants and blue sneakers and
approached the counter. He then presented
to the teller a note demanding cash.
When the bank employee took too long
to fulfi ll the demand, authorities said, the
suspect got fed up and fl ed the scene empty
handed. Th e bank reported the incident
to the 112th Precinct.
During an investigation, detectives
obtained security camera footage taken
shortly aft er the attempted robbery that
shows the suspect wearing a black shortsleeved
shirt, gray pants and black shoes.
Police concluded that he had changed
his clothing sometime aft er fl eeing the
bank; he was last seeing heading on foot
westbound along Austin Street.
Cops described the suspect as a white
man between 30 and 40 years of age, standing
6 feet tall and having a mustache.

East Elmhurst man
struck & killed by car
Police are investigating the death of a
man who was struck by a car less than
one block away from his home in East
Elmhurst.
According to police, at 12:37 a.m. on
May 21, offi cers from the 115th Precinct
responded to a 911 call regarding a motor
vehicle collision involving a pedestrian
struck on Northern Boulevard, between
100th and 101st Streets.
Upon their arrival, police found
47-year-old Carlos Gavilanes, who lived
on 101st Street, lying on the roadway with
trauma throughout his body.
EMS responded to the scene and transported
Gavilanes to Elmhurst Hospital,
where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation by the NYPD Highway
District’s Collision Investigation Squad
found that Gavilanes was crossing
Northern Boulevard when he was struck
by a 2003 Honda Civic, which was operated
by a 24-year-old female. Th e driver
remained at the scene following the incident
and was not injured.
No arrests have been made at this time.
Th e investigation is ongoing.
It’s the latest deadly traffi c fatality to
occur on Northern Boulevard, which in
recent weeks has become a focal point
for transportation safety advocates across
Queens. On April 28, a 9-year-old boy
was killed by a hit-and-run driver near
the Woodside/Jackson Heights border,
prompting renewed calls for safety
improvements on the roadway.
