FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com MAY 12, 2016 • THE COURIER SUN 11 Thomas Edison HS gives tour to BP Katz and Jamaica Now leaders BY BRIANNA ELLIS bellis@qns.com/@briinformed Thomas Edison high school enlightened Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and the Jamaica NOW Leadership Council with an informative tour of programs that the Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school has to offer. The school, located at 165-65 84 Ave. in Jamaica, gave guests a detailed look at a variety of educational programs that CTE strongly aims to assist in the development of Jamaica, Queens. Hosted by Moses Ojeda, principal at Thomas Edison, and Deepmalya Ghosh, Jamaica Now Leaderships Council Youth Committee Chairperson, the tour on Monday emphasized CTE’s Automotive Technology Department and the Electrical Installation Program along with other fi elds. “The importance of Melinda Katz’s visit today is not just for funding but also to get the word out to the community that we are developing the viable workforce for tomorrow and it can defi nitely be a link to the Jamaica Now efforts that are taking place,” Principal Ojeda told QNS. “I think that alone is more than funding to bring to the table.” Katz, Jamaica Now leaders, representatives for Senator Leroy Comrie such as Assemblyman David Weprin and Councilman Ruren Wills, as well as other guests strolled through numerous classes at Thomas Edison. Visitors stopped by a “Shop in a Box” medical assisting classroom, a program that builds supply boxes fi lled with basic medical and electronic essentials that help to educate medical centers in undeveloped countries. “What we hope to educate the public on is simple THE COURIER/Photo by Brianna Ellis Borough President Melinda Katz visited Thomas Edison H.S. in Jamaica. medical procedures like how to wash your hands, how to take your blood pressure, how to obtain your temperature, and we truly believe that this box will be the unlocking potential for everyone we take care of,” said a student during the Shop in a Box presentation. The sweet aroma of maple sugar cookies trailed the halls, as guests stopped by a cooking classroom fi lled with students of Thomas Edison’s culinary arts program. The automotive technology program allowed offi - cials to receive an up-close look at cars and budding mechanics of the three-year sequence that provides students with the knowledge necessary to maintain and repair automobiles. Guests also stepped inside the school’s cuttingedge spray booth of the collision repair and refi nishing technology program. “We want to make sure that getting out in the community is the word that these students are working hard to learn a trade,” Borough President Katz said. “And again, CTE falls on the Jamaica Now plan because we are hoping that local businesses will take this great opportunity to be able to train young people for their future careers.” Borough President Katz allocated Fiscal Year 2016 capital funds to transform Thomas Edison’s existing classrooms into computer labs last year. According to a Katz press release, “Last week, Thomas Edison High School took home 11 medals (including seven gold medals) from this year’s New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Championships Conference. The New York Association of SkillsUSA is a Career Technical Student Organization affi liated with SkillsUSA, a national partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The gold medal winners will represent New York State at the national conference this June in Louisville, KY.” The CTE program at Thomas Edison exercises strategic tactics of the Jamaica NOW Action Plan, an agenda that strives to revitalize the Jamaica community through small business support and partnering, quality job increases, internships and apprenticeships. Thomas Edison High School is a one of the few public New York City high schools that offer college-preparatory career and technological programs. Upon graduation, students are equipped with both a high school diploma and an endorsed CTE diploma in their career and technology subject area.
